Powers and Perils
Powers and Perils is a highy complex role-playing system with a skills-based advancement system. Book One is dedicated to character development. Players can choose from four races (Elf, Faerry, Dwarf or Human) and then embark upon a series of ten steps to create their character. Characters have 10 basic abilities (compared to 6 for AD&D). They choose from an extensive list of skills and may have rare special abilities determined through chance. The combat and magic systems (outlined in Book Two) are also very complex, with specific rules for different types of combat (including mounted combat) and rules for equipment and armour damage. There is a separate section for magic, and experience for magic and physical combat is determined separately. The third book describes the Powers & Perils Realms and the creatures that inhabit them providing numerous encounter tables. The fourth book has detailed rules for human encounters and determining treasure. The final book is essentially an adventure module with background to County Mordara in the nation of Donara and an adventure description. Despite its complexity, Powers and Perils has maintained a fan base to the present day.
