The HârnMaster rules were first printed in 1986 but saw a forking in the late 1990s. In 1996, Columbia Games did a "streamlined" 2nd edition which adopted ideas introduced in the BattleLust miniatures system. The original author, N. Robin Crossby, decided this was too simplified and in 1998 self-published a player's handbook for a separate HârnMaster Gold product.
Subsequent to the 1st edition, Columbia Games split off portions of the rules into separate books: magic rules in Shek-Pvar and in HârnMaster Magic, priestly rules in HârnMaster Religion, and material particular to tribal characters in HârnMaster Barbarians.
