Warriors of Mars

(Redirected from Category:Warriors of Mars)

Rules for combat with miniatures, similar to the earlier Chainmail, but set in the Martian fantasy world of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Barsoomian creatures such as banths, tharks, and thoats are listed in the original Dungeons & Dragons (volume 3, p. 19), a tie-in that makes this item arguably part of the D&D canon.

TSR was contacted by the Burroughs estate, and to avoid lawsuit Warriors of Mars was never reprinted. High auction prices support the belief that it is rarer than comparable TSR incunabula such as Boot Hill and Star Probe.

Warriors of Mars is mostly a d6 based wargame, with rules for terrain effects, morale, and moving figures around on trays. Appropriate miniatures were manufactured in the 1970s by Hinchcliffe and Heritage models.[1] There are also charts for individual combat, random encounters, and advancing in level, making rudimentary D&D style game play possible. John Carter, incidentally, is 13th level.

When asked about the size of the print run over thirty years later, Gary Gygax thought that it was either 3000 or 5000 copies.[2]
