Hi All!! Looking for a little help from the hive mind. One of the guys in my game group decided to liquidate his older D&D / AD&D material. Most of it is pretty standard, however, he has a shrink R3, R4 and RPGA1. I need to be sure that the shrink is original.

I am pretty certain on RPGA1 is original. However, not absolutely sure on R3 and R1. Can I send over some pics for you to look at?

Note: The owner purchased these directly from the RPGA back in the day. Not sure how he was able to keep his hands off of these.

To add to this amazing find, he has R4, RPGA3 and RPGA4. These are not in shrink, but are in very nice condition.

Please take a look at the shrink wrap and let me know your thoughts.

Addendum - to add to the incredible level of amazing, is the story about how they came to light. I am putting together a Gaming Flea Market, and a buddy said that he might have some stuff to add. He had not looked at his old RPG stuff for 20+ years.

My recollection (I saw R1+ at conventions in NJ BITD) is that R1-3 were shrinked, but that R4 was not.  I don't recall RPGA1-2 either way.

Allan.

Responses have been mixed, but for the most part, we are hearing that R1, R2 and RPGA1 were all shrink wrapped, but the remainder were not.

Blackmoor is correct -- R4 in the series did not come in shrink.

Gypsy,

Here is what I'm observing with regards to the additional back photos. Take a look at the back-side photo of the Rahasia (1984) module. There is roughly a one inch strip in the shrink, that stretches horizontally across the middle, from side to side. This middle overlap is a common trait with 1st edition D&D shrink. It does not mean your R1 & R3 (1982) shrink is not authenticate -- not what I'm saying. Just one of my basic methods I use as a check. Another good way to verify is if someone on here could compare their shrink copies to your photos (front & back). Could be a good educational experience for all of us. Unfortunately, mine are not in shrink.

Hope this helped.

I have a TSR archive copy of RPGA1 and it matches very well with what is shown here, as do the R1 & R3.

The back seam on the Rahasia suggests it's authentic. That's a defining characteristic of at least one way TSR is known to have shrink wrapped them, and is consistent with the era of Rahasia (early to mid 1980s). Rewraps don't have that feature.

I think there's a thread or three here outlining some of the characteristic marks of a rewrap.

Sorry, it's entirely possible I wasn't being clear, so I'll try again.

The RPGA1 is wrapped differently than the R1 & R3, which is consistent with how they should be, to the best of my knowledge. While waiting to hear what Jeff says about his Archive copy of R3.

Ok so I did not have a chance to post pics yet, I will later this week.

I looked over both my R2 and R3 TSR archive copies and both have the smooth backs and air-holes (which I see on the back of your R3).  Sadly my pathetic collection does not include a shrink RPGA1 or R1  :(.

Safe to say these items are original shrink and worth quite a bit of money. (judging by the fairly recent explosion of values of shrink items).

Thanks stratochamp. This is good to know. Let's see what Jeff has to say as well.

Late breaking news.    We have just found several more shrink gems.   AC5, U1, AC3 and a handful more.

Just a heads up, we will begin auctioning these items off on the Facebook page - RPG Auctions.    Auctions will run from Sunday to the following Sunday at 8pm CST.

First up, tonight is the shrink AC5, in additional to a shrink Dungeon Master's Log and NPC Character Sheets.   Thrown in for good measure is an unpunched X10 Red Arrow, Black Shield.

Please contact me with any questions.   Thanks!!

Anyone following this auction on FB?

Up to $1500.00 USD.

Thing looks damn good in the shrink, though. WAY too rich for my blood.

Dave, get the barbarian in the corner a drink, quick!

Thanks for the update.  I am too terminally uncool to be on Facebook.  (meaning I don't want to get into arguments with family and friends about trivial things and also I'm waiting for the last Eskimo or Martian or some other equally distant humanoid to get on FB before I do.)
