I've seen it on eBay (maybe yours DL?)

I also have one tucked away somewhere (not the same cover, however).

As to opening it, only you can answer that.

Are the Ironworld contents worth reading, or is the box better left sealed to protect the Earth from certain doom?

But was Ironhedge a stand alone fantasy rpg? Or just a supplement? Or what?

Pretty obvious that it's a standalone system.  Back of the box states it has its own combat and magic systems.  It also comes with its own screen, character cards, encounter cards, maps, etc. plus it includes a premade setting.  Doesnt come with dice though.

ok i reached my copy of Heroic worlds, it says the rules are "concise, to put it mildly".
Given the kind of aura of eccentricity surrounding this game, i rather expected them to be convoluted to say the least, if not utterly incomprehensible.

What i'd like to ascertain is if this fantasy rpg is serious or is sort of a parody of fantasy rpg's.
I have the impression it is something similar to Spawn of fashan.

I dont get that impression at all.  What I see is a guy who has an idea for an RPG but doesnt have a lot of money to pull it off the way he wants.  So he uses his state of the art Apple ][GS to design the box art and text.  He cant afford a good artist so he uses his Kodak camera to take a picture of his older sister dressed up in what I can only assume is a cross between three separate cultures: American Indian (blouse, jewelry), Roman (helm), and Saxon maybe (sword, shield).  He then takes it all down to a local printer and has them put it together.

Goofy, yes.  Intentionally goofy?  I just dont see that.

At least, 3 different versions of this boxed set exist. The color wrap cover is only for the last print. The previous ones have artwork directly on the boxes. The more recent is approximatively from 1991 while the others are 1987-1988, and 1989.

The content includes mini rulebooks, with mini materials. Including mini dice and pencil.
There is a few supplements as well.

Here the contents of two prints (88 and 89):

My copy is from 1991 and is similar to the second. However, it includes two rulebooks but with two different color for their covers.

Yep...I have the later version as well.  I always took it as a parody, a playable parody but a very simple one too.  I planned to mine it for adventure opps or at least use some of the pre made dungeons for other games.  Wasn't there a contest to solve riddles and find a golden dragon statue advertised in this thing?
