You shouldnt have to pay anything over the retail price of $59.95.  Fantasy Flight still sells them from their website and most game stores still have the revised edition in stock.  You should actually be able to get it for a significant discount.  I think you can pick it up from Amazon for about 35 bucks.

An upgrade pack for the first FFG Talisman is available.  This makes it compatible with the other add-ons for the Revised version.

Don't forget the highly collectible and hard to get promo cards:

Doppleganger, Instructor, and, if I remember right, Arena

Pretty sure doppleganger and instructor came with a pre-order of the Reaver expansion (Revised Edition).

Arena and Rod of Ruin might be the ones you are thinking of.

I honestly couldn't tell you - I'm pretty sure there were a few ebay auctions when they were first released for like 20 bucks each or something, but I would assume that most people pre-ordered just to get them and have a "complete" set - I know I did.

The guy over at http://www.talismanisland.com might be worth talking to.

This is an excellent website. I remember downloading several expansion sets like Sorcerer's Tower and printing them :) very good stuff there.
