The price on this book is always much higher than others in the series (Book of Monsters, etc.):

Can anyone vouch for the content in this book---is it worth the extra investment???

I cant vouch for it, but if you are considering placing a bid on it...the seller is reason enough to avoid it and it has a huge marker mess on the top front cover page.  I wouldnt touch it for more than $10 and since its the GE I wouldnt touch it all. :(

I have a few copies. It really isn't much different than the others in the series.


If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

Placing a bid with GE is Russian Roulette.  I don't care what he has or how cheap it is, I would never place a bid with him.

Ah, but since I don't have any of the series, I'm still curious to hear what folks think about Edgren's writing, creativity, usefulness in a game, etc.

I'll take a look at it again and let you know. $69 is stupid for this, anyways. The most I paid for a copy was $22. But I'm cheap.
I would like to get The Book of Treasure at some point, just to fill out the series.

If you're just curious about the contents then you should pick up The Fantasy Gamer's Compendium from Gamescience.  It contains the entire line of "Book of" books, and it should be cheap to pick up.

Phil Edgren was part of a group of guys who played at a store in Wheaton Maryland caled The Little Soldier Shop.  They used to have D & D games on Saturdays in their back room.  Phil, Dan Bress, Ed Konstant and a couple of other guys also did a number of other titles besides the "Book of" series.  The Ringbearer, Der Fuehrer, Imperial Guard (15 mm Napoleonic wars), Knights of the Round Table, and a Sherlock Holmes game are some I can remember.  They later became Phoenix Games.  Kerry Lloyd of Gamelords also played there (he charged me $3 for a photocopy of the original three books when I couldn't afford the real thing).  I learned to play D & D there back in 1975.

That's cool ddt58!  I'm hoping to republish the Gamelords lines, which would bring some of these classics to a new generation of gamers.  I'm working with Tadashi Ehara, who owns the rights to the Gamelords books.

Do you happen to have any current contact info for any of the Little Soldier and/or Phoenix/Gamelords folks?
