Okay, so I've decided to start my own thread where I'll be asking The Acaeum gurus to help me decide whether or not a particular RPG book is worth getting at a specific price.

There is a local used gaming store here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, called Whyte Knight, that has tons of older gaming products. (I've bought and traded game books there for a long time.)

Here's my initial list of inquiry based on what WK currently has available. (There is a lot more but I cannot remember all the prices I've marked down, at the moment.) Prices are in Canadian dollars. EDIT: I've added some U.S. currency conversions.

AC4 The Book of Marvelous Magic $10 ($8.75 US)
C4 To Find a King $10
DDA2 Legions of Thyatis $35 ($30 US)
GAZ14 Atruaghin Clans $20 ($17.50 US)
I8 Ravager of Time $20
I9 Day of Al'Akbar $18 ($15.75 US)
MSOLO1 Blizzard Pass (w/pen) $20
WG5 Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure $22 ($19 US)
X6 Quagmire! $15 ($13 US)
X7 The War Rafts of Kron $20
X9 The Savage Coast $35

Sons of Azca $20

Fiend Folio $25 ($22 US)

Assassin Mountain $20

Empires of the Sand $20
Menzoberranzan [boxed set] $85 ($74.50 US)
Old Empires $20
Spellbound [boxed set] $40 ($35 US)
Swords of the Iron Legion $10
Volo's Guide to Waterdeep $10

The Horde $30 to $35
Storm Riders $15
Black Courser $10
Blood Charge $15
Ninja Wars $20

Wonders of Lankhmar $10
Tales of Lankhmar $15
Cutthroats of Lankhmar $14 ($12 US)
Rogues of Lankhmar $15

Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix I $25
Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix II $25

Bastion of Faith $15

Most of these are way, way over priced compared to what you can get them for even on ebay. Menzo for $85. That is just absurd.

I could see myself getting the GAZ14 for $20, if it was in good shape and complete.  The rest of the prices are at best on the high end, in some cases, wishful thinking (on the store owner's part), in others, ridiculous.

Agreed...I think they'll be sitting on the shelf for a long time. A long, long time.

Fiend Folio for $25?  If you asked I'll bet someone has an extra (or ten) they might just give you.

Yeah, most of these are overpriced but there are a few that are close to Ebay prices and you also have to factor in shipping costs with Ebay.  You dont have to worry about that with a local store.

If it was me I would probably pick up GAZ14, AC4, I14, X6, and MSOLO1 (maybe I9 and C4 as well).  But only if they were in mint, complete condition or in shrinkwrap (definitely shrinkwrap on the MSOLO1...no point in getting it otherwise in my opinion because there is no point in opening it).

I'll ask. I could use a Fiend Folio. Only have one, and it is all beat to hell. I kept it because it was the first one I ever bought, and I used to use it all the time.

That's why I like to get stuff locally, if I can. Plus, you have to remember that those prices are in CANADIAN dollars, not U.S. dollars.

None of those are in shrinkwrap. The only ones in original shrinkwrap are a few of the Lankhmar accessories.

Give me a Fiend Folio; I'll pay shipping.  Ooo!  And a Best of Dragon Volume II also.  I've got all this other stuff, but I'm missing those two, relatively common, things.  Any contributers to my cause? :)

I have an extra Fiend Folio I can part with...but no Best of.

These are probably reasonably priced:

BattleSystem Fantasy Combat Supplement w/H1 Bloodstone Pass (CAN $25)
S4 The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (CAN $10)
U1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh ( CAN $8 )
UK4 When a Star Falls (CAN $15)

If the Battlesystem contains a complete H1 then grab that as fast as you can (even if it isn't complete you could probably get $25 for it).  A complete one with box is probably $65-$100 depending on condition.

Out of this list, the U1 and S4 are not bad, assuming they are in solid condition.

Battlesystem with H1 for $25 looks too good to be true, as H1 would easily go for twice that or more on E-Bay.  Unless there is something really wrong there (my assumption is that it is not complete in some fashion), that is probably a good grab.

Eld Wiz would be okay for a first print, but it is probably not a first print, in which case, it is a ripoff.

Everything else is overpriced, IMO.

Hmm, so Bloodstone Pass is a boxed set. I didn't know that.

The H1 module is included "inside" the BattleSystem boxed set, so unless H1 is less wide/tall than a standard TSR box, I doubt it will include the box. I won't know until I get them to open it for me. (Whyte Knight almost always re-shrinkwraps every thing they get used.) I won't be buying it unless I get to see inside the box.

WK actually has two copies of the BattleSystem box, but the other version is only the box (for CAN $24). I'm thinking that the $25 box either isn't complete or the copy of H1 isn't complete/is in horrible condition.

I'll find out in the next few days.

The copy of U1 is in decent condition but the copy of S4 isn't. I doubt the copy of Eld Wiz is a first print.

Question: For the Tales of the Lance boxed set, how much would you pay for that box, if complete? The store has another copy for around CAN $20 but I'm not sure if it's complete. Plus, it's not in great condition.

That seems most likely when considering the prices of their other boxed sets.  H1 is a very thin box (maybe 1 cm wide) but it should be the same length and width so it wouldn't fit inside another boxed set.  H1 also comes with a bunch of cardboard buildings and counters.  Part of its value is that it is very difficult to find a complete one - also very difficult to find one where the box has not been crushed.

The Battlesystem boxed set is not very difficult to find and a good condition one would be $20 or less.  Copies are often missing the 2 lead miniature generals though.

Hmm...

Now, I'm thinking that I might buy both boxes in hopes that if I combine the two, I'll get a fairly complete BattleSystem box plus H1 (most likely without the box), but only if H1 includes everything else.

What's the BattleSystem box worth with the miniatures?
