Problem solved. Here is a (reconstructed) dialogue of yesterday in my store:
Me: "Are you sure that there was a gray box first edition
GURPS boxed set?"
Him: "Yes, I saw it in American websites
Me: "What website?"
Him: "Well, I don't remember..."
Me thinking: here we go again...
A friend of him: "I remember it!"
Me and him: "Do you???"
The Friend: "It was Noble Knight something..."
Me thinking: Noble Knight Games!
Me: "Well, let's look for it on Google..."
(googling)
(site found)
(search for
GURPS basic set)
(over 200 matches - yikes!)
(no trace of this first edition)
Me: "Are you sure about this?" (in a very skeptical tone...)
Him: "Well perhaps I was wrong..."
The Friend: "I was a little ill that day..."
Me: growl!
I go to the warehouse and I pick the (so far known as) first edition box. I peruse the contents. I show them the absolute lack of 'second edition' in any of the booklets and the catalogs announcing the Big New Item -
GURPS - with that art on the cover.
Him: "I'm sure having seen it on eBay"
Me: aaaargh!
I go back in the warehouse and I grab the third edition book with silver printing.
Me: "Is THIS the one???"
Him: "Oh, yes!"
The Friend: "Yes, I remember it"
Me: "This is a THIRD EDITION BOOK!"
Them: "Well, we did a honest mistake"
Me: "No more discounts for you!"
Them (unimpressed): "Well, can we check the Planescape campaingn setting?"
Me: "Sure"
and so another day in the Hard World of Games Retailing continues...
