Hello Experts,

Just a quick question of valuation. Recently purchased a 1st printing of a DMG at a very collectible price (ie. high side). It was advertised as a Very Fine to Near Mint condition item with multiple photos to show its condition. I received it recently and the cover had the slight bubbling I had read about & expected, the back cover is ever so slightly more dirty/soiled than described or pictured (photos do lie), and there is slight rubbing along the edges & spine, as described. The interior is pristine with the orange flyleaves and all white (no yellowing) pages without any highlighting, marks, or writing . . . still looks & smells crisp

The bad news, which was not described, is the fact that the spine cover looks to be monochromatic. At first I thought this was a rare misprint 8O , but soon realized that it must have been due to sun exposure

Can the "Evaluation Team" help me to handicap the value of this item? It is not easy to find these, in my opinion, and I would like to keep it, but I would like to arrange with the seller to settle upon a more equitable price.

Thank you all in advance,

"Okay, we turn the corner and see a Purple 'WHAT' !?!" . . (the DM rolls a 20 or so he says) . . It all went black right after that.

Hi PM-Knight,

I have 4 of these. I can tell you I would not pay more than $50 for a near-mint version.  Their not that hard to come by.  If your patient and watch the listings you should be able to pick up a first print DMG in Fine or better condition for $25 to $40.

As to the condition of the DMG you have, significant sun damage on the spine only would not let me value this for more than $20-$25 if everything else is as described.

Nice copy.  Sorry you got rooked on the item from Titan.  I would ask for a refund and send it back.

Sorry, not trying to be harsh, its just that titan is notorious for overgrading. I think some actually pointed that copy out in an earlier thread and noted that it would be overgraded.  Titan has to be one of the bottom of the barrell sellers of whom I'd never ever buy from just based on reading whats been written about them here.

New/Like New items are not a problem for Titan to discern . . . but other grades are.  Your "Very minor wear at spine" sounds like a major mis-grading.  I've bought Near Mint/Mint/New items from them with no problems.

We all know to be wary of Titan, but will Titan come through and refund the money, make you happy, etc.?

Just a memory I'm having about old purchases from Titan…

There was a time when they didn't do much research in the printing/rarity department. Up until about I'm guessing three or four years ago I found many under-priced gems from them. You did have to know what you we're looking for though. Items weren't stated as such. Two I remember in particular were True-First Grayhawks and 1st print Basic Sets. They were popping up what seemed like weekly.

The best deal I ever got from them was a TF Grayhawk that turned out to be Kevin Blumes copy: the Former TSR Owner. And a minty-shrinked 1st print Basic Set. I believe I paid around $30 for the two items. I laughed for days on that one. At the time the GenCon auction would have quadrupled those prices. Now how knows what you could get.

I think there still are some decent deals on more obscure stuff.  The mainstream TSR stuff looks well priced. About 2 years ago I picked up Labyrinthine by Wee Warriors for $60.  Its uncut and in excellent condition.  I also picked up a 1st print Dark Tower for $8 and some other nonTSR D&D stuff.  But the good deals still need to compensate for the ultra high shipping costs.

Yeah I picked up what 'I will' say is a good deal in the white booklet I+early Judges Guild maps from them, and I've bought various things from their website/Ebay/GenCon Booth over the years. Course with the price that the Judges Guild lot went for they asked me what was rare in that lot and I believe have looked more into Judges Guild itmes since then (though they still try to dump the journals, etc and constantly mislabel Journal #5 as #3  :?  )
