I have just recently pulled this old book out of storage and determined that I am willing to part with it.  I am auctioning the book on EBAY but could really use assistance.

I need someone to help me value this book properly.

This is the rare 2nd print Beta with the inserted Monster Manual pages.

I bought it the day it got to the gaming store in King of Prussia PA, early in 1979.

I never even heard about the recall until much later, and used the book extensively those first few years.

Please help if you can.

Thanks.

Hey JD

I think at this point any kind of valuation would just be a guess.  Your copy is the first that I have seen on Ebay.  Although I don't particularly search for these kinds of things, I don't think has been many (or any) in the recent past so there really isn't much to go by.  Even if there was one or two previous auctions, that really isn't a very good sample to base a valuation on.

In any case, I think you have done everything you need to do to get a good price for your auction.  Namely, having it posted here bringing it to the attention of the people who do go after these kinds of things.

I suppose this might be an interesting one to make some guesses on.  I'll weigh in at $227.98

I don't know how much it'll go for, only eBay can tell you that.  I would expect that it would go for several hundred dollars.

If we're starting another guessing game, I'm in for $454.54.  (It really depends on how much the "big guns" want it, I won't be bidding anywhere near that high.)

[edit]Hrm.  I should add -- if you really want to increase your bid potential, open the auction up to international bidders.  I'm in Canada, and several other prominent collectors outside the US would be interested, I imagine.

yeah i agree. whilst i won't be bidding, there are several heavy-ish hitters who are not in the US and you would be MAD not to allow all and sundry to weigh in.

but hey its your auction & good luck :)

I'm trying to change the EBAY listing to allow international bidders, and to include several other photos, but so far not having much luck.  EBAY's tools can be difficult, and lock up on me often... JD Harvill

Oohooo, if I win then that means I'm a big gun.

Sadly, I'm nearly out.

well, it seems that most of the folks here already declared that they're interested not that much in it... are they bluffing? everybody has to roll a d20 for their bluff check, pls!
...if this is true, i'd say that at least half of the HAB(*) are out...
...it this is true again, i'd say that mars' assumption of final price is much more likely than the 4k bucks shot by deimos!   :D

(*) HAB stands for highly afflent bidder! :D

WOWZA!!!  I am seriously considering selling my 2nd alpha off now with this price. It has been safely tucked away for a while but I think mine is in even better condition (more will be posted after I get a chance to look at it).  What does everybody think, a private Acaeum auction, a public Acaeum auction, eBay (and their disgusting fees) or contact thefantasymuseum and offer mine for the runner-up price in that auction?

We've been waiting for you to show up with such a reaction!

Tough call on the auction style. That auction price could be fluke since they are so rare. In that case, you might get the most if you contact the fantasymuseum. On other hand, yours might go higher in auction if it's in better condition.

YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR ME TO CHIME IN ON THIS? It has been a while since I reported finding one last year. I am surprised anyone even remembers.  my wife and I just purchased a home yesterday so the $$ would be a big help right now.  I'll see what the collective advice is on this and let everyone know what I do with it.  Who is "we" by the way?

Thanks! John

Yes!

Beyondthebreach remembered that someone else here had one of these.

Pretty good result for something you almost sold in a big lot!

Just the usual suspects around these parts. I don't buy such expensive items, so others will give you better auction advice (and/or offers...). Have you checked your PM's?

Thanks for the tips on all this. No PMs at all on this. Everything is theoretical now anyway.  I just have to be careful the wife does not see this or it would be sold tomorrow.
