I have a Kobold Hall Origins Tournament Dungeon By Bill Fawcett Role Aids sealed. It's # 0592 of 750. Does anyone know the value of this? I found one one ebay, obviously a different number but listed as used and the other two I found online were also opened with no pricing. One of them is in a museum. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm selling off my father's estate and so far this is the one book that is eluding me.

Thank you for any help or advice you can give. It's much appreciated.

Hello JeepGirl,

One that was not in SW just sold on eBay:

** expired/removed eBay auction **

Because it is still in the SW, you can anticipate the value to be 2-5x that.  It would be reasonable for yours to sell for around $1,000-$1,500, if advertised properly.

I'd recommend listing it as an auction, with a reasonable starting price.  You can list it here, on eBay, or one of the Facebook groups.  Whatever you do, make sure you post a link to it here, and possibly a couple of other collector's forums.  You will probably get the best sales price for it at auction, but someone might make you a straight-up offer that you can't refuse.

We just sold the Black Opal Eye that was listed for 2750.00 and took the offer of 2K. At the end of the day, we only received around 1750.00 because of ebays fees. That makes me shy about auctions. I know I can put a reserve on it, but I think even more fees will be included. So that's part of my confusion. Donman-9105 is the account we are using for D&D plus many other items. It seems when we have anything rare, on my account or my husbands, we get badgered about our prices. I'm very fair and always tell people to make me a fair offer. So if I do post it as auction, and put a reserve on it, should I start at 1500.00 for a reserve? Also, I'm not savvy with forums, so which one would I list it on? I have many more to list. It's definitely time consuming. Thank you so much for your help, it is very much appreciated.

You could post good photos here on the Classified thread and solicit private offers. A lot of the more dedicated collectors frequent this forum, and it may be a gap in many of their collections. That would avoid the eBay fees also.

Give that a go for a few weeks, and if you don't get a bite you can then move it over to eBay.

That sales price is also partly the reflection of the fine reputation of the seller.  Still, properly advertised and photographed, sold by a reputable seller, this sales estimate is correct.  Good luck!   8)

It's been way too long since I read that, and I only skim read it IIRC, so now I'm gonna have to add it to my Christmas reading list.

That's an excellent point, Blackmoor is a top seller of specifically D&D. A reputable seller should be able to do fine (especially with what you've mentioned having for sale and have sold) but may not hit the same numbers as a specialist.

Had to comment either way because it warms my goblin heart every time I see Mayfair get a little Collector Love!

I'll get it photographed and try to get it listed on the Classifieds here. Thank you for the suggestion. I'll be sure to let you all know when I have it listed. Thank you all for your help!

Kobold Hall is the rarest of the Mayfair line, and for some reason it seems particularly rare as far as coming up for sale.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

I'm after a copy and someone has posted in the classified section as well.. so potentially you could sell it and save ebay fees etc.. of course may get more in an auction as well of course

So, Kobold Hall was 750 numbered copies, but I know there are copies out there that are not numbered. Blasted Lands was 1000 numbered copies, and again there are copies out there that are not numbered. For both, the orange folder seems to be the most common. I think I've only ever seen Kobold Hall in orange, although I may have seen a brown Blasted Lands.

For the others, Fez I seems to be the most common, and most usually in green. Nanorien Stones seems to be very common also, and usually in blue, and Beastmaker Mountain seems to sit nicely in the middle, as the slightly rare one. I usually see that one in red, although I have seen it in brown and yellow fairly often too, so that one seem to get a pretty good mix up, and because of the introduction of brown and red, it looks like a procurement issue from the printer, and not just buyers or packers swapping covers.

Given age, and the popularity of Role Aids at the time, I am surprised that Kobold Hall is that much rarer than Blasted Lands. I wonder if, at the time, there was a preference towards glossy cover saddle stitched product, and foldered black and white product was seen as something less desirable and therefor less saleable?

When you say common, do you mean $20-30, run-of-the-mill-like-an-average-AD&D1e-module common?

No, more like out of every 100 of the foldered five that appear for sale, maybe 45 of them are Fez I, 40 are Nanorien Stones, 12 are Beastmaker Mountain, 2 are Blasted Lands and 1 is Kobold Hall. So 'common' relative to the others in the set. Fez I and Nanorien Stones float wildly around between maybe $30 and $150 depending on condition and requirement in the market at any particular time, and their PDFs are in the wild so I suspect that keeps the low end collectors (the ones who collect primarily for access to the information rather than respect for rarity and importance to genre) from pushing up the price. Then there's a jump to Beastmaker Mountain which tends to fall into the $100-300 range, and a further jump to Blasted Lands and Kobold Hall. I am surprised just how high some of these prices go now, probably because I found it very easy and cheap to put the set together back in 2006, so I do expect some pretty violent swings with those two.

It was harder and more expensive for me to put together a set of Tortured Souls! and I'm in the UK where it was published. Back in 2005/6 TS!10 and TS!12 were particularly rare and expensive to get in open auction. Now they all seem to be fairly equally available with a complete run going for around £200. So the ROI on the foldered five has been incredible over these past 15 years on some of the non-TSR stuff.

Good to know, though all I have is a blue Nanorian with the top bit of the cover missing. They seem to have taken a design cue from the packaging for 8-track tapes, which had similar cut-out portions that tended to self-destruct.

  Yeah. There are a lot with that problem, and also I don't know if the earlier ones were shrink wrapped by Mayfair prior to shipping to stores. Maybe done by stored after they started having problems, but I don't know any of that for sure. It would have been good to have tracked down an original employee of Mayfair from back in the day to ask some questions about how things went down. I haven't looked but maybe Shannon (Designers & Dragons) knows someone. He used to frequent the forum but I forget his screen name. Good set of books by the way. A long read of maybe 1800 pages spread over the five books. So hard going. You could think of it as Heroic Worlds on steroids with backstory and structure.

I bought Beastmaker Mountain new BITD, and ISTR that it was shrinked.  Not sure if I bought it at a con or at a store, though.

Shannon's on FB, and so is Kevin Hendryx who worked at Mayfair on Role Aids.  Peter Fenlon's also active on FB, and was CEO of Mayfair in the 2000s.

Ian's point though Allan (and I believe he is right) is that even if you bought it at a store, it could have been shrink wrapped by the store.

Bill Fawcett would be the person to ask as he both wrote them and was an owner of Mayfair.
