Is the TOEE playtest notes our current record-setter price for manuscripts, et al?:

Allan, I have just got to ask... who is buying all this stuff?  There must have been over 150k spent on rare/super rare items like these just in the month of December alone...and we are only 2 weeks in.   There were 89 bids on the notes, so people are fighting for these things with some serious zest.  8O

TOEE is one of my favorites, as I imagine it is for quite a few collectors.  It's not surprising that this sold for as much as it did.  This was only for playtest materials, not even a pre-pub or an original manuscript!

When it comes to the extremely rare items, the connoisseur and trophy collectors are involved, with different motivations for wanting these items, all of them good.  When passionate collectors compete, it can get ugly, but it's good for the seller. :)

Most people buying brown boxes these days seem to have the cash.. and quite a few are being sold..

fwiw:

I received no playtest notes on TOEE.
I did receive the half-completed hand-typed manuscript (which I returned to Gary in the aughts, in a ceremony at the LG Game Con put on by Troll Lords; somebody video'd it, iirc).
Though there were one or two 'insert' pages added, the bulk of it was unchanged from its original creation.

Years ago I sold one photocopy of Gary's original at the GenCon auction.
I promised not to make more. My word is good.

But many Acaeum folks didn't bid on it, thinking I *might* make more.
Too bad. Anybody remember who bought it?

After this eBay sale, gotta wonder what my ToEE creation box with all my notes might go for...

My friends Dave & Gary made a quantum leap in the human soul. Remember them.

I know how you can find out Frank.  List it on eBay, or the Facebook Acaeum page, and see where it goes! :)

Primarily just two (2) bidders going at it though, so not as if there are 50+ people bidding at these prices ... Whoops, my nose is bleeding again ... gotta lie down ;-)

"Okay, we turn the corner and see a Purple 'WHAT' !?!" . . (the DM rolls a 20 or so he says) . . It all went black right after that.
