Hey guys, it's the first time for me asking here, and it's for a buddy I work with on & Magazine, so bear with me. I told him that the Acaeum crue could help with an appraisal on this:

John wrote:I have an original 1974 1st printing white D&D box set, dice included with the original description paper in the zip lock bag. Do any of you have any idea how much it is worth? I've looked on E-bay, the 4th printing is going for just over $1200 USD. I am going to put it up for sale some time this weekend, but was told a few years ago since it is a 1st printing that I should ask about $20000 USD, does anybody have any opinions? I cannot find anything on a sale price for the original box set. Any help would be appreciated.

Compared to the stuff being sold on e-bay, my box is not damaged at all but the box itself is slightly aged. All is included, dice and all 3 books and the reference sheet. Funny the printed price is $10!

Please let me know if there are any questions that I can relay back to him! He's going to send me a picture which I'll figure out how to post.

Thanks everyone!

If it's a white box, the earliest printing it could be is a 4th.  So I'd first get him to confirm the printing using the Original D&D Set page.  After that, he could get opinions here of the set's condition by posting several pics.  But only a well-described auction (by preferably an eBay seller with substantial positive feedback...) will conclusively determine what it will sell for; the range on extremely rare items is quite broad.  As always, use the values here as a guide only.

Okay, thanks! He thinks maybe it's not a first printing, copywright 1974... but not sure. But here's the pics and any help on guiding me with values is appreciated too!
Thanks again!
Okay, no matter what I do the images come out ginormous. :)

Is it better to link to the images? http://village.photos/members/rredmond/John-s-white-box

Hopefully that works. :)
Be well all!

5th print, in pretty nice condition.  I'd guess somewhere between $200 to $300.

I'd agree with this assessment.  Possibly closer to the $300 total with those dice in there.

Yes. Box looks lovely! The booklets do look from these pics however to have pretty bad staple rust. I would want to see a picture of the centre pages.

Stick it on auction with a $200 starting price plus an ad in the classifieds here; or you could play around with various BIN and offer combinations.

Good luck! :)

Is that the original packaging for those dice if you mail-ordered them (from TSR) or bought them in a store? I've never seen that before.

He's not sure but says that it also contains the paper insert about the dice, which leads him to believe that it is.

I'm not sure if these dice were originally purchased from TSR directly or not.  But at the time TSR was getting their dice from Creative Publications.  The sheet with the dice is a sheet from Creative Publications so its possible they came directly from Creative Publications and avoided the TSR markup.

Here's a good article on the subject:

A note on the box set.  The staples have started to rust - there are some rust spots covering about 25%, no real staple bleeding.

The box is nice but by no means near mint - it is not pure white anymore but does shows some light yellow spotting and a couple corners show wear in the corners/edges.

I made a blog post about those dice today & linked back to this thread:

Dice of the Gods

Ron, a request - could your friend take another picture of the rest of the text on the insert? If the dice were slid up, he could probably get the rest of the text in a single pic.

I'm sure John will, he's an extremely nice guy.
Or rather his wife will, she's the photographer in the family. ;)
I'll post back here when I get the pictures.

Sorry guys, but it's been sold. Apparently to someone from The Acaeum - no shock. :)

So no more pictures, but perhaps whoever bought it could get those for you. ;)

Be well and thanks for all the help!
