Oppurtunity has arisen for me to buy a box with the following dragon magazines, how much would be a good price?

#3, 7-13, 16-19, 22-32, 34-35, 37-100

Hi Dave -

For that lot, if they were in good condition, I would be happy to pay up to $200. #3 can run to $40-$50 on its own, the other sub-20 issues normally fetch around $10 each, and if you add $1 apiece for the others then $200 is a pretty good discount on the average price per issue.

Regards

Mike

$200-300 would be reasonable if they are in VF or better.  There are 12 of them that are worth decent money.  Beyond #40 usually doesn't bring a lot ($1.00-$5.00).  I would be looking for NM or better personally, unless you just want to read/use them.  If in lesser condition I would see if the seller would take $150 or less.  My 2-cents...

compare with
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5918027216
which I took to be fairly low (bid ~$150 here, despite the fact I was going to tell the sellers to keep the high numbers).

(Time for me to get my usual jab in again about The Acaeum claiming to reflect the "market place" (=eBay), only, yet being so badly out when it comes to the Dragons, especially the later numbers. Lotsa disillusioned ppl from that, no doubt).

Despite this; if you need those earlier issues, or can use the spares...

Presuming fairly decent condition, try:

#40-100: $50
#30-32, 34-35, 37: $25
#22-29: $50
#16-19: $35
#7-13: $80
#3: $50

= $290

All those issues under #40 are worth money, IMHO. That's the "break point" which appears to come up time and time again, in auctions.

Good collections with such a quantity of low numbers appear only rarely on eBay. (Saves on shipping, too!).

Will give ya $20 for #21-39 in good condition, Mike.
Heck, I even rounded up, there: won't complain, though!

No problem David... I'll keep you in mind when the time comes to sell. Of course, the shipping on the 20 mags to the UK will probably run you another $60 or so.....

Heh, heh. You ain't got M-Bags in Oz, do ya?

Would still be cheap, even with that OTT shipping charge.

quick aside: If it's not enough $ for the seller's "large stack of zines", you could always make an offer for those issues up to #37, only, in the knowledge that any other missing gaps (especially above #60) should be a cinch, later.
Might even end up with the later ones thrown in, anyhow! :p

OK, Dave,
How did it go?

And will this current auction get a smile from you, in that context?

(has just "jumped" a bit...)

person wasn't there when i went yesturday, heading back monday.  i'm actually buying it from the wife of a hobby shop owner.  she's cleaning out her extras.  worst part is her extras used to include Dragons 1,2,4,5, and 6, but she lent them to her son so he could use them for reference in games and he lost them!

*Erff.....* :( :(

Heh. So she's not totally clueless as to their value, then?
("cleaning out her extras" just sounded a bit worrying in that context ;))

thx for the update.

well, i'm not sure how informed of their value she is.  they don't have a computer at home or office, and she's estimating value based on cover price.  she'd talked about having a friend put them on ebay for this starting price if i don't buy them.  i'd gladly buy a dragon #3 for $1.50, but good luck getting me to buy the later issues at 3.95!    unfortunatly she's unwilling to break up boxes.  she has four boxes of extra mags, i'm working on the first right now with the earliest issues.  once i secure that i'll try the later ones.

went to negotiate, but it seems the terms have changed.  her husband wants her to sell all four boxes as a group.  the other three are a relatively complete set of about #100-#324.  i really only wanted the first box, but buying the other three might be worth it.  of course i'll have to try to convince her that they're not worth more that $1 an issue...

Dave, one factor to consider: some of the d20/3e issues go for surprisingly high prices (apologies if you already know this).

I'm not sure exactly what all of the factors are, but NM or Fine issues from 274-280 are routinely sold for $10 to $20 (assuming all inserts or polybagged items are included, of course). Issues in the low 300s can often bring $10. There seems to be some ebb and flow to this — over the holidays, for instance, I could not get my hands on a copy of 276 for less than $22 — but, in general, these issues have a surprising value considering their recent publication (and their devotion to a putrid system).

Should you decide to go ahead with the deal, you might be able to recoup some of your investment by immediately selling these off (especially if you can get them for say, $2 or $3 a pop). Hell, I'd be happy to buy a couple of them from you ... :D
