Howdy all, i am leaving these pics here in order to have an overall appraisal of the item and, moreover, a confirmation by its supposed owner:

20160224_112658.jpg - Google Drive

20160224_112717.jpg - Google Drive

This is a vol.2 of a third printing set. The second and third pics shows that it'd come from TSR Hq, from Rob's desk apprently. Unfortunately there is no other writing than the name on the cover (d'oh... this is the very first time i am disappointed by not having enough writing within a book...).

Hence my very first question is to Rob: could you pls confirm me that it is your writing and stamp on the cover?

then the second question is, assuming it is not a fake, what is your evaluation for such an item?

Thanks and ciaooo

I have no special insight other than this would be a potential red flag:  TSR Rules... Tactical Studies Rules Rules. Odd.

I draw the line at collecting... D&D Towels.

Did we need: Jade Magi Sewer Crawl

Shoulda been: ".. from Pangreenia to Floratopolis, from mystical Treeonia of spectral Forests to Schruborial dimensions."  - The Forests of Leng

Hi Axel---

I can email Rob to ask if he remembers this set.  The handwriting does look like his, to my eye.

Allan.

Hi Axel,

I have a number of Rob's items that have his signature and your specimen signature seems a match to me. I also have a few things stamped with the stamp in question.

Hi Allan, hi Bill, great news! If possible i'd like to hear from Rob if he recalls some memories about it... i am nearly sure that it will not ring any bell since it has not a single note by him inside... however, lets give him a try!
Thanks and ciaoo

The "TSR Rules" stamp is well-known to some.

It looks like his handwriting to me.  If you are concerned about forgery - I would put your concerns at the door.

I deal in antiquarian books, and forgery is definitely a problem.  However, you must keep in mind that the effort involved in faking something must be worth the return.  To create a stamp like this would cost what....$30 minimum?   Then to get the booklet in the first place - and then commit a crime....

It doesnt seem like the few hundred dollar payout would be worth it to a forger who puts the time in like this.  I could be wrong, but that's just booksellers' wisdom.   A red flag would be if it were in pristine condition.  It's not.  Does it smell of cigarette smoke?  It should.

Thanks,
Chris

From Rob:

Robert J. Kuntz wrote:The handwriting and stamp are indeed my own.

Here is the history:

I had no real "office" at TSR as I was the shipping manager and located downstairs,  But I was also the:

--Convention Chairman
--Doing design work
--Writing articles for SR and Dragon (i.e., From the Sorcerer's Scroll was created by me)
--Was answering all of the mailed in D&D questions before I left TSR

So...  I did a lot of writing when at home base or would come to TSR at night (I had a key like others).  In fact It was a contest between myself and my brother and Brian Blume (who usually trailed as the third arrival as he had to go to the post office) on who would arrive first in the morning.  When at TSR writing I worked adjacent to the art room in Mike Carr's office or, if Brian was gone for the evening, in his office sandwiched between Gary's and Mike's.

The stamp was ordered to be used in pre-stamping outgoing envelopes used for mailing back answered D&D questions, and was probably used in a few personal correspondences as well.  I used it to stamp those D&D books I used in referencing assertions pertaining to the rules as made in the questions, this because my own volumes were in bad condition at the time (I would ask Stratochamp to confirm here as to what date he purchased my original LBB).  The shipping department had extra loose copies of the boxed set books for replacement purposes, and this is where I secured the 3rd printing books from, but all of them, not just volume 2 as pictured.

I wish to thank the members here for their continued interest in TSR and my involvement (re:  ancient objects/esoteric information) from that time.

BTW:  I did not start smoking until 1979, so the latter post in this thread (re:  smelling of c. smoke) would not be correct in this case...

Thanks for this - that 1979 smoking start is actually fairly important to know for this sort of thing.

Kudos!
