I recently acquired a 1st print Monster Manual and 1st print Players Hand Book (not True 1st Print).

The outer books are in good shape.

The problem with each of these books is that the former owner attempted to insert errata himself.  This includes dark pencil marks where he would scribble out an Armor Class rating and write in a new one next to it for example (it is partially erasable and reveals the original text).  But, even more disturbing is he glued small pieces of paper with new text over old text.  I believe he may have photocopied this text from a new printing as the font is the same, but somewhat bolder than the original.  This is present on about 20 pages of each book.  Otherwise the pages are clean.

What is the value of these, anyone?

I'd have to say not much, since they have, apparently, been damaged severely with the over-gluing of home brewing. Maybe someone would be interested in them, but I'd not be willing to shed more than $10 (each) for them.

You might try to pick the brain of a professional book restorer or something like that.  If there were a way to safely loosen the glue and thus get the "additions" out of there, it would help.  Even if you were left with stains, it would still be an improvement.

As is, I'd guess a little bit better than what copycat said, but not a lot, maybe toward $20 each.  Someone who wants to collect these original printings will be willing to accept some amount of wear (each collector will be different as to how much), but once it's altered so that you can't see some of the things that make it different, it's a tougher sell.

Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

Thank you for your input.

Sadly, these books are beyond my restorative capabilities.  Or perhaps even an professional.  I was pretty excited about getting these, until I began to thumb through them.

I might be interested in trading for them if they're in good shape otherwise.

I could post pictures.  The bindings are great.  The covers are smudged up a bit.  They are pretty clean other than what I've described.

What did you have in mind for trade?
