The paint itself may have lead in it.
Lead does not absorb through the skin, but if your little one chews off an arm or leg, it can cause irreparable damage. All of my minis are in my game room in the basement; my wife asked about them before our son was born in April so I packed them away.
Sorry to hear about your brother, Shane. That is a tough nut to chew.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

Well I've basically gone through his RPG material, so know what I have. As for minis well when I get a camera shall try and tackle them then.
I do have a painting (print actually #200 something out of 1000) from Brom called Black Wing and am wondering value for insurance purposes. Also have a red Dungeon T Shirt with Warduke on it and wonder when that was made.
The hardest thing to tackle will be the Star Wars Decipher cards, Mythos cards and Wizards (LotR) cards. Should I leave them in the boxes he has with their individual protectors or arrange them in a 9 card holder for a binder?

Couldn't tell you the best storage system for cards, as I'm not into collecting them, but one thing I do know from selling a bunch of ME:The Wizards cards last spring: Every detail counts.

Being a Tolkien fan, I had about 75 of the cards from Christmas gifts when they were new, but only used a few times. I had thoughts of collecting the series when I picked up a batch of about 400 dirt cheap. Then, I began to research numbers and variants and came to the conclusion that collecting over 1700 cards was not going to happen for me. So, I decided to sell.

I initially had the auction set up to detail the exact cards present, including how many of each and rarity. The first couple of times, it failed to sell. Then after being questioned on the color of the border for a few rares (they had blue and black border variants), I added this little detail to every card in the auction, and watched the bids roll in.

Something to keep in mind should you decide to sell.

Don't do a binder for the cards. Binders can put a bend in cards, especially those near the inner rings of the binder.

I don't collect too many prints, but from what I see on ebay often for TSR artists (Elmore and Caldwell, especially) is that they don't typically re-sell high even when sellers have them framed nicely. My guess would be $10-$30.

Maybe the P.K. Dick and the Gygax books. They used to be worth selling individually, especially the P.K. Dick, but I haven't tracked these on ebay in a couple of years. The other things would probably go as sets.

I know I'd be interested in several of the books I saw such as the Burroughs, the Day of the Triffids and the Red Dwarfs, and maybe the Erickson's.

I more or less agree with Jason. The PKDs might net you $6 - $9 apiece if you sold them individually as BiNs, but it might take a while. They're not in perfect condition, but they're not bad either.

If it were me, I'd put the Lovecrafts, Burroughs, Dicks, etc. each in their own lot and do auctions with a minimum bid of whatever you're willing to accept. You have some good titles in decent shape, and I'd guess you'd get $20 - $35 for the lots in auction. I'm not that familiar with the other authors so can't say much about those.

Sorry to hear about your loss Shane, not been too active here for a while...

With regards the lead minis, I think its been covered, but BitD I would paint copious amounts of lead minis from Grenadier and then GW and dont appear to have any issues :wink:

It would be a case of chewing off arms that causes issues though...

Photo 3 is Ral Partha, either Witches Cave or more likely from Wizard's Lair/Room/Library (whatever the 2nd word was).

IMG3915 is also RP, IIRC, but I may be wrong on that one, too--Grenadier and others have had similar torture sets; that said, it does remind me of Dennis Mize's style, so RP seems likely to me.

My condolences on your loss as well, Shane.

Doug summed up use of lead in miniatures pretty well. While there are no regulations against it, so to speak, I know of several manufacturers that steer clear simply over "implied" liability and the costs of cleanup.

I inquired of my casting company if they had considered moving back to lead from "lead-free" models and they gave me an emphatic "no way."

Apparently, there are substantial EPA regs regarding cleanup of any facility engaging in lead-based production that would ultimately be cost prohibitive.
