thank you mark & brette for your answers. in the electronic age the bar could be set that low without much extra undue inconvenience. that would not have  been practical in heroic worlds of course because of the hodge-podge nature of what would or would not have been included. mark, how many role-playing (i.e. not miniatures rules rules/sets, not cardboard counters etc.) items would you say you actually have that came out prior to aug 1990 that are not listed in heroic worlds? with the 5700 non-magazine items i have, i bet not more than 50 would qualify under the above criteria. i'll check. anybody else please give us your items too if you like....

Other than English languages too?
And only RPG, or even each modules, playing aids, and so on?

anything that would normally be in heroic worlds would count (i.e. modules, solo books, rules systems etc. but not for example warhammer fantasy battle which is a miniatures game or cardboard counters or cardboard lairs etc.). yes it would be interesting to know about non-english rpg's from the period hw covers as well, but that's a separate question . what i was wondering was, by the broadest definition possible, just how many potential items did lawrence schick miss when he collated heroic worlds.

Multigame or multigenre books, such as Mirian the Metalsmith. It had at least two printings that I know about.

As a quick guess I would have said about 50 but it does make wonder.  I haven't been through HW in a while so I forget some of the ones that are listed.  1990 is a very limiting factor as well.

There are some companies that I would have to check their copyright date to see if they qualify.  For example Better Games which has Crimson Cutlass, Conrad's fantasy, Battle Born, Era Ten, Encounters Fantasy Scenarios, Designing Fantasy Scenarios, Encounters Sci Fi Scenarios, Designing Sci Fi Scenarios, and their superhero game.  Some small companies produced a number of books like this.

One of the other bigger markets that isn't covered so well are English language items from other countries.  From the UK, Australia and Canada there is probably a bunch: Lair of Medusa from Canada (there are another 4 or 5 from BC that come to mind but I don't own), Daemon, the 3 Beholder Supplements from the UK, etc.

well, i checked. using the brette/mark scale of anything ever sold/intended to be sold i own 126 items that came out prior to 1990 that could have been listed in heroic worlds. 9 of those are 10th anniv. tsr module lots, 8 are from tri-tac, 7 from ragnarok, 7 from TAF Enterprizes, 5 from Adventure Danger & Dragons, etc. I was surprised it was that many. Mars probably owns 20-30 other frp items that i don't that could have been listed there. Add in another (arbitrary) 50 frp items and that's 200 total frp items that are missing that Mars would like to have been listed there.

Perhaps we could make a list that could be modified when other games/supplements will be added?

I checked quickly and I stopped at the F letter, and find at least 25-30 items, without foreign languages RPGs.
Only for French RPGs/Supplements, I think I have more than 100 items that would have been listed.
It is the same for German, Italian, and other countries RPGs...

Realistically there is potentially a much larger number if you consider tournament modules that were available for sale.  Uncle Ebenezer's Will, You Bet Your Life and You Bet Your Life Again by MDG.  I think there were a few from Ghenghis Con and probably some of the others as well.

I am guessing that your list probably focuses on Fantasy RPGs as well.  I could probably add another 6-10 Superhero RPG items and maybe another 10-15 small press Sci-Fi.

What are the TAF Enterprizes items?  I know nothing about them.

oh definitely, i am just referencing frp items when i listed the appx. 200 items from the prior email. i know you have many other non-fantasy rpg items that i was not even discussing. and i am also not including tournament adventures, you are correct. it seems to me they should be included in a separate listing. Taf Enterprizes are basically nothing but numerical listings of stats.

Better Games

Barony (BG-FB, 1-879182-07-6):
* Conrad's Fantasy (BG-FCF, ISBN 1-879182-04-1) = 1990
* Encounters Fantasy Scenarios (BG-FE, ISBN 1-879182-06-8 ) = 1990
* Designing Fantasy Scenarios (BG-FDS, ISBN 1-879182-05-X) = 1990

Era Ten collection:
* Battle Born (BG-SFBB, ISBN 1-879182-00-9) = 1990
* Encounters Sci-Fi Scenarios (BG-SFE, ISBN 1-879182-02-5) = 1990
* Designing Sci-Fi Scenarios (BG-SFDS, ISBN 1-879182-01-7 = 1990

Avengers of Justice collection:
* Good Guys Finish Last (BG-CBGG, ISBN 1-879182-08-4) = 1991
* Villains Finish First! (BG-VF-AOJ, ISBN 1-879182-09-2) = 1991
* Comic Book Free-Style Role-Play: Designing Comic Book Scenarios (ISBN 1-879182-10-6) = 1991

I don't own Crimson Cutlass, but it is in the Better Games catalog for 1990.

[Edit:  Changed "8)" to "8 )" ]
