So inquiring minds want to know -- what are the differences between the Gamescience Tegel Manor and the Judges Guild versions?

http://www.acaeum.com/jg/OC-GameScienceTegelManor.html
http://www.acaeum.com/jg/Item0027.html

I just got a copy of the Gamescience version but haven't seen inside any of the JG printings to compare.  The copy on the cover says it's "Revised and Expanded" but doesn't specify how.

I'd say the Universal System stats are probably a later addition, since the original version's for D&D, and then obviously there's the art by Niels Erikson on every other page.    But are there any other substantive differences?

Gamescience version has every room described in much more detail...Old Tegel was roughly 2-3 lines to describe each room, Gamescience uses 4-5 times that. The GS version also changes various creatures encountered, I assume due to not having TSR permission to use certain creatures.

That was a fast reply -- thank you!

Looks like it's still worth looking for a copy of the older version, then.

When one discounts the emotional impact of owning the original product....

...I am quite impressed with my copy of the Gamescience version of Tegel Manor.

Now that I know the original version only gave 2-3 lines of text per room, I appreciate my newly acquired Revised & Expanded all the more.  Erickson's art is not at all bad -- kind of Jeff Dee-like -- and if I were to run it someday I'd be happy to have the extra context for encounters.

It's still pretty concise (or bare-bones) by modern standards.  That's what makes me curious to see how much was added!  And of course there's a historical value to the original that any collector can understand.

You might be pleased to know that an updated to 3.5 version is scheduled to come out later this year.  It has stayed as close to the original as possible.  Rumor has it Necromancer is going to do full scale miniature maps of the manor.

Al, Shane -- don't worry that I'll slack off!  My hand won't leave my sword-hilt till I've got a JG Tegel to call my own.

Another difference between JG and Gamescience versions is that references to the batrachian deity Tsathoggus have been changed into the generic goddess Nivatopredi. I don't quite understand why Niels Erickson did this, but I don't like it. Otherwise, it is a pretty fine product, and the style of writing is impeccable.

Plus they added a few charts - e.g. on pit traps and an alternative to the deck of many things.

Perhaps legal worries of some sort?  (Just a guess here, based on the name's and description's similarity to Tsathoggua.)

Looks the Judges Guild and Gamescience versions of Tegel Manor may very well wind up being the only versions of the module to be published.  Necromancer is stalling using the possibility of 4E not to release their version just yet ... check the first post in the thread by Tsathogga.

If 4e is announced this year (and if OGL) at GenCon, then I think this will be delayed till around GenCon next year..if not then I hope it can still be released sometime this year.
It will be released though, just delayed pending news of 4e.

What's that bit on the last line of the bottom message about?

Now if they say that City of Brass won't be at Gencon... that's another issue.

Are they releasing a D20 version of City of Brass at Gencon?

EDIT: Okay, I see what they are referring to - not an RJK product.

Is the original version (not the one that says Original on the cover) rare or something? I've been looking or this damned thing (granted, not everyday, or every week) for about 3 years and I never see it come up... oh well. I'll keep the hunt alive. I thought I was not destined to get a Dark Tower either.
