It's not mint, either. Everything looks near-perfect in the sale image- and the likes of the maps are; however, the guidebook has a small area of damp-rippling on the lower left corner of the back cover which also has minor effect on the last page.
Some sellers might have been more honest up-front...
About "par for the course" in my book, and probably better than most, especially since I seem to attract crummy sellers. *shrugs*

Hope yer Tegel was fine and minty :)

p.s. Loved yer closing-bid "trick" on the second copy! Kudos to ya :P

There are 3 FFC printings. I have 3 with different dates. I'll try to remember to post them tomorrow.

I'd be really interested to find out which I don't have, and which order they go in.

Hope yer Tegel was fine and minty

It was in very fine/excelent condition, but not mint. No water damage though.

Drop me a line if you want to pass on your 1st edition CSIO. Did it come with the flysheet?

I'm not willing to open it in order to find out. I'm going by what the top card states.

Heh, heh... hence the

What is the highest stock number in your brown CSIO "guide" book, then?
Just strikes me that there could/should be earlier versions which only go up to #14, say, rather than #17. i.e. prior to installment "J".

I'm no longer clear on the chronology, as it has been almost 30 years, but the very early JG stuff came as a subscription.  I started my subscription around Issue 3 and at least part of the City State came as a promo with the subscription.  Each lettered booklet was a separate installment, matching the periodical,

Mine lists up to #17.

Thanks for checking.

*grins sheepishly*
Oops. I think I've just answered all the chronology questions by finally opening that packet I'd been sent containing the first four JG journals.
*
Had been keeping this sealed because the postal delivery people had trashed it by bending it through my mailbox and I was waiting to see whether they needed it to investigate my claim.
Have given up ever hearing back. Surprise...

*sighs*. And yes, they are creased and slightly damaged, but could've been worse.... *meh*

==

According to the Initial JG Journal issue/installment (="I"; October 1976), the Guide to the City State (stock #10) was only "available 1st December 1976".
The highest stock number on the "Booty List" at that time was #8.
(#9 = Judge's City Map stated available November 1st 1976).

Installment "J" is dated December 1976/January 1977 and had the full stock list to #17 as found in both our copies of the CSIO "Guide Book", at least.

I had wondered whether the Guide Book was available at the time of the "Initial" release (which I took to be up to item #14). This is now obviously incorrect!

=

With regards the Tac Cards; aside from the amusing comments on those in the initial JG journal, they are listed as being "135 Dungeon Tac Cards" even on their very first stock list.
"140" is presumably an error on their behalf when guessing(?) the number of cards they were going to produce, which they didn't bother to correct. (Or did they, later, on any later state cover cards??).

By flysheet, do you mean the initial issue of the journal, or was there another "flysheet" in the "packet" version of the CSIO (stock #12), per Tadashi's recent sale?

The UK sale didn't come with the initial newsletter/journal or any other flysheet (*looks to check*).
I obtained the first journal (which would've come with the initial JG subscription in October 1976), separately, in that batch of US sales noted above ($2.50ish, pro rata).

===

History trivia sidenote. The familiar JG logo only came into use as of Installment/Journal "L" (= #4), April/May 1977.
Was boring gothic font "Judge's Guild" before that.

Smart move, on their behalf!

The First Fantasy Campaign by Dave Arneson

From what I can see, the 1st edition is 96 pages, has $7.98 price on the cover, an is marked as copyright 1977 on page 2.

There is also a further 64 page printing with no cover price, marked as copyrighted 1980. More refined artwork and fewer typos.

Could you give us more details of the unknown printing?

What are the differences between the two?
Same cover and price?
Same page count?
Copyright information?

I've just got a second first edition FF. I have one without a price on the cover, and one with a $7.98 price. I also have a 1980 edition. I take it that the 1977 without the price on the cover is the first edition first printing, and that the first edition second printing has the price added? Presumably the later 64 page version with the same cover was a cost saving exercise?
