My only 'active collections (meaning striving to own everything in that category) are: Italian language RPGs (being a retailer has advantages  :P ) and books about games or gaming (the very last being the Elfish Gene - I suggest you read it too). Then I collect game magazines, but in a selective way... for example, I like magazines rich in news, reviews, comments, opinion columns and such but I found horribly boring the ones with just adventures, new rules and so on. Wait: an exception is made for Italian language game magazines (still some issues of some periodicals missing sadly   ) that I actively hunt for completeness' sake.

All of them are active, though some are "dormant" at times:

- RPGs and accessories (of course)
- Pipes
- Literature and poetry (early printings, mainly American, preferably signed or inscribed)
- Football cards
- Arrowheads (found by myself, never purchased)
- Skulls (also found by myself, and strictly non-human), the "prizes" here being a walrus head that I found on a beach of the Bering Sea - among fresh wolf and bear tracks - in Alaska and strapped to my backpack and lugged out of the wilderness to a remote landing strip where I waited for a Supercub to pick me up...very heavy, but worth it; and a perfectly intact raven skull, very difficult to find such a thing.
- Teeth
- Semi-precious stones, also found - never purchased

I have a growing collection of non-specific aches and pains - might have something to do with approaching 40 I guess. :D

As for proper collections, apart from RPG's (FR, OD&D, considering making the random accumulation of Traveller stuff into a Bona Fide collection) nothing really. We don't have space for storing stuff, let alone displaying it, so collections would just be shoved into storage somewhere, which seems (to me anyway), kind of pointless and a little sad.

(I do have all of Terry Pratchetts books, but don't really consider taht a collection - just stuff that I like too much to get rid of!!)

You can never have too much of something you didn't need in the first place.

Not too many different collections here. Space constraints have forced me to limit my acquisitions to "essential" items:

1) AD&D 1e (anything remotely linked to Greyhawk), including Dragon magazines, issues 37 - 100.
2) Nice hardcover editions of my favorite fantasy and SF authors.
3) RPGs and CCGs set in the worlds of the authors from #2, above (includes Stormbringer, MERP, Dune, CoC, Amber Diceless, Dying Earth, AD&D Lankhmar, A Game of Thrones, etc.
4) Antique metal bookends (though I suppose this is technically an "inactive collection" as I haven't added to it in years, but always on the lookout for something interesting).

Fun thread.   Always fun to hear what others collect.

1) AD&D / D&D / OD&D including 3E and 4E (ya, ya, I know) anything and everything
2) Other non-TSR material - JG, Roleaids, etc, again, everything
3) Other RPGs - Traveller, Warhammer, Harn, Palladium Fantasy, etc
4) Minis - Ral Partha, Darksword, Otherworld, Warhammer, Warhammer 40K (older stuff mostly)
5) Authentic reproduction weapons - just started, just picked up a sweet mace
6) Fantasy and some sci-fi books
7) Rose bushes - working on finding roses grown in the early 1900s as they seem to be more resistant to disease than the current ones ; up to 150 currently, but winter will take a few out
8) Small comic book collection all fantasy related
9) Boardgames - these things take up loads of space

More or less inactive
1) Baseball cards - from childhood ; got fed up with all the chase cards
2) Baseball equipment - game used bats, batting gloves, and hats ; never purchased; primarily from my days working for the Minnesota Twins
3) Stamps, coins from childhood

Inadvertant collections
1) Pets - 2 Basset Hounds, 2 Ragdoll Cats, 4 turtles, untold # of fish ; sometimes I look at all of them as they wait for dinner and wonder how I got here

Let's git to killin'!!

Not to derail the thread...'

But Guido, PM me about the roses. My folks have become huge rose growers in their old age, and might have some suggestions.

Late to the show but here goes.

Active:
1.  1e AD&D - everything including nonTSR - 90% done
2.  Basic D&D - everything including nonTSR - only missing OB3 and ST1
3.  OD&D - Done, but I would eventually like to grab a woodgrain.
4.  Star Fleet Battles - all including various printings
5.  Task Force Games - everything
6.  Metagaming - everything
7.  Specific Game Mags - Ares, Dragon, S&T
8.  Gen Con Programs from all conventions I attended. I sold a bunch off in state of "confusion" about 10 years ago, and have regretted it ever since.
9.  Anything from Pacesetter Games - 90% done :D

Passive
1.  SPI Games and products - very slow
2.  Champions by Hero Games - replacing old collection
3.  Paranoia by West End Games only (just started)
4.  Various TSR stuff and game systems. I have started most RPGs at one time or another and some are completed, then I decided I don't care and sell them...then regret sets in and I buy again...and the endless cycle continues.

Inactive
1.  Comic Books - marvel pre 1990; actually started selling off.
2.  Man o' War by Games Workshop - just missing a few miniatures

This pretty much sums it up. I am not a printing junkie, so my AD&D stuff does not have one of each printing. However, I do strive to get the first printing where possible, and sometimes this creates multiple copies, but only here and there. Since I bought a bunch of it new off the shelf way back in the day, most are already first prints.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

All of my collections are inactive right now: Not selling, or adding to any of them.

One thing for sure.
I have NEVER made a profit from buying/re-selling ANY type of collection.

My wife would likely pay someone to take it all....
(If you talk to her, make sure I am gone, otherwise I will fight for it).
She (in her mind) would justify it as a way to have the space for something worthwhile. 8O

For some reason I'm suddenly thinking of the basement in Silence of the Lambs.
