I just touched base with Steve, and he's waiting on an additional printing of the maps that need to be fixed (from our group's GenCon purchases), so he should be able to ship by mid-week or so.

@ Ian:  Steve said he can back-order more copies if you want me to do that, but shipping is still killer:  $50 for 2 boxes to ship to the UK.  Do you still want them??

Just got my Upper Works today from FRP Games off Ebay...good packaging and sent quickly, plus total with shipping is under cover price.  I'd recommend them!

Yeah!  What he said.  I only read about twelve pages of it, but I got the idea.  Good writing, and I'm sure very helpful for those considering it.

Great review, made me sad though. Gygax is gone, brought it home, and an amazing era has ended, but the same crap is following his work.

The part I like best is him telling everyone, companies and fans both, that this is a game first and foremost to have fun with, and also that it was his puppy before it became everyone elses dog.

I will be doing that index (lotsa good and bad stuff getting in the way of course) but more indexing work is to come.

Thanks for all your work on this, bet you had fun reading through the set though. Now to get to run or play it.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

@ Jason:  I was really hopeful that we'd have some allusion on the level 2 dungeon to where Bottle City was located, but that's clearly not to be at this point... *sigh*

I was very happy and excited to see the many references to the Black Reservoir.  I feel as though I played a small part in bringing that area to light, so it was very satisfying to see it mentioned!!!  Too bad that wasn't one of the area that will be developed by EGG himself in the future.

Mike:  you didn't "play a small part in bringing that area to light"---you freaking rediscovered the thing!  It's possible that Paul Stormberg already had a copy, but even if he did, you're the one who published it to Greytalk, and first made it available to GH fans world-wide :D

Let's hear the whole story, Mike. :)  You and Grodog have dropped enough teasers to whet the RPG-lore appetites.  Spill it. Spill it. Spill it.:)

Please?

The story is archived on my site @ http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh ... voir1.html
and http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh ... voir2.html

I'll let Mike relate the story itself.

I think there is a thread on it somewhere here.  The upshot is, EGG wrote a story for a small print fanzine (that mostly covered PBM Diplomacy games, btw), The Conquistador, in exchange for free advertising for his then-new D&D game (this was in 1975). The story was basically a retelling of a Castle Greyhawk adventure by the character Erac and three others (I believe Ernie Gygax and a couple of other friends)  to a place called the Black Reservoir in Castle Greyhawks lower levels, complete with flying dinosaurs, sea serpents, and evil mage.  Anyway, EGG apparantly forgot the story even existed, not having a copy for himself.

In the mid-90s, I lucked upon a small set of the Conquistador fanzines, one with the Black Reservoir story within.  Eventually I contacted EGG, and who was very pleased and excited to get a copy after all those years.  With his permission the story was publshed on Greytalk, and for the first time in about 25 years the Black Reservoir portion of Castle Greyhawk came to light.

What's great is that this is a very rare item, and we are lucky copies survived, as I have only heard of a very small handful still around (like, maybe two others).  I actually saw another copy this year at Gencon, it was the Black Reservoir story in another later issue of Conquistador (obviously the editor reprinted the tale at a later time, maybe he and EGG had worked out some sort of mulitple publication for free advertising).  I guess the most interesting part is just the fact EGG completely FORGOT he had even written the tale until I sent him a copy; wonder if there are any other "forgotten" EGG tales floating around out there no one has located yet?  Better check out all the mid-70s fanzines you find just in case!!!

I'd urge anyone interested to go to Grodog's site and read the story; it's brief but memorable, and it's hard after reading to not start jonesing for a little Castle Greyhawk action!  Maybe someone someday can work up a "Black Reservoir" level based on the info within...

FWIW, I will map the story at some point soon, as part of my EGG tribute efforts.

They offer free domestic shipping on orders over $75. Very reasonable.

Why these sets are being sold at a %20 discount brand new is beyond me, but they are probably going to jump from discounted to collectable very quickly.

What was the print run on this set?

The Yggsburgh hardback is now $10 ($17.50 with shipping) and will no longer be available after the 31st.
(FYI, it's been sold at $10 previously during periodic sales)

http://www.trolllord.com/12days_of_xmas.html

On the eleventh day of Christmas my Troll Lord sent to me...
Any HARDBACK book for $10.00!!!!...
Use the paypal buttons to the LEFT, on the PAGE. In the "Add special instructions to merchant" section - please put the TITLE of the book of your choice in the memo section of your paypal receipt. The Players Handbook 3rd printing and the M&T 2nd printing are almost sold out, get them while you can! And Gary Gygax's Yggsburgh will no longer be available after the 31st of this month!

(Or you can also get a free Yggsburgh with a Crusader subscription)

No Upper Works during their 12 day sale ... any chance of a Upper Works fire sale before the end of the month? Will they really trash all of their remaining unsold stock, or instead sell it off bulk at a big discount to a 3rd party (e.g. Noble Knight)? Or was the printing low enough that they'll sell out without problem?
