I believe that in The Hobbit, the trolls held conversations, different than the mindless mountain trolls in LOTR.

In this case, I am not talking about "similar."  I am talking about "the same."

The orcs in the Holmes Basic Set are not just variations on the same theme...They are images taken directly from Sleeping Beauty...with the name "orcs" attached to them.

The artists for He-Man and Return of the Jedi clearly picked up their imagery directly from D&D publications.

Having just briefly reread this thread, it might be a good time to discuss the benefits of the Zocchihedron Mark II 100 sided die.  I'm sure it is a huge improvement over the original mentioned earlier.

It's always a good read to go through the Post-It-Note around the world story too.

I think the one item that stands out in my head at the moment is the small press item called U.G.S. Fantasy Universal Game Screen.  It states on the package that it is "For use with any game!".  The outside of the screen contains cartoons that look like Dragon magazine cartoons but the inside of the screen is blank.  So "For use with any game!" means you get to copy whatever tables you want onto the screen making this rare product essentially a high priced piece of cardboad.

I've said it before (here and elsewhere) and I'll say it again: Exotic Characters and Worlds by Gamemaster Guides. The surfing fighter subclass really puts it into a league of its own. The book is comical and painful to read.

It's "Monster Manual" supplement (whose name escapes me at the moment) isn't much better. Half the monsters are blatantly stolen from movies or television shows.  Munchkins. The Blob. Cousin Itt.

I have to agree with some folks earlier in this thread.

Under The Storm Giants' Castle gets my vote hands down.

Puffy cut-away dungeon walls and ballon people that scream "Kill the pins!" when they see swords?

Wow. With something like that being published, it makes you wonder. I read somewhere that the author was a JG contest winner and got UTSGC published through the contest. Is that correct?

I have to run the dungeon once before I die just to yell "Kill the pins!" at the befuddled players in that game..... :D

Center_Stage_Hobbies,

It is correct that he won a contest to get published.  Info was in a thread here on the Acaeum.

1.  Amber the diceless role-playing game.

2.  Any LARPG.

3.  Starfaring - heh, it was the first game, and I think the last, I bought via catalog sight unseen. I still have it though 8O

4.  Under the Storm Giants Castle - can't be denied.

5.  Pretty much anything with the name DragonLance in it.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

Thanks, Martin, for the info. I'll look for that thread in the JG subweb, I assume...

Storm Giant's Castle ... epic

I know this is not "laughable" .. but it was the biggest laugh (maybe a new thread?)

Oh and Tomb of Horrors ... sometimes the only way to deal with something is to laugh ...

Actually the first time I played this the greediest most egotistic, uber competitve player started pillaging the the pews

Now the end result  ... that was laughable

Makes me smile even 25 years on

If I recall red_bus nearly wet himself as BT got fried

I ordered this -- sight unseen -- from Noble Knight a few weeks ago because I'd read it was a further expansion of the designer's Space Patrol/Star Trek rules, and I'd never heard of it. Terra Games' 1982 Starfleet Voyages. I laughed out loud when I pulled it out of the package.

Image

From the box:

The Final Frontier holds Danger and Adventure for those who volunteer for STARFLEET VOYAGES!

A complete roleplaying system for interstellar adventure including a separate starship combat game, color counters, and special Gamescience HIGH IMPACTâ„¢ dice!

Love that little â„¢. As far as I can tell, it's "complete" because it appears to shove the Heritage Star Trek rules (with the words "Star" and "Trek" removed) with Zocchi's Star Fleet Battle Manual. Even funnier (to me), I knew the artist who did the cover. She used to do artwork for my Doctor Who fanzine at the time.

Damn, if I'd have known, I'd have bought that damn thing!

[Its a joke based on the character I play in an ongoing C&C game - a gnome druid who has a "kangaroo pouch" from The Book of Marvelous Magic.]
