Howwdy All,

While I do like the more classic look to these figures and would gladly pick them up, I must say that we are blowing a golden opportunity.

There are scads of creatures for which a figure has *never* been done. I have seen dozens of sculpts for umber hulks, giants, goblins, orcs, ogres, dragons, mind flayers, trolls, maniticores, slimes, oozes, etc. How about some sculpts for creatures for which there are no sculpts, whether in production or out of production?

Well, O.K. here are all of the AD&D monsters I have been unable to find an accurate (in terms of scale and appearance) miniature for (of 1004 possible figures I have been able to find miniatures to represent 573 or ca. 57%). Admittedly, some just don't translate into miniatures or are just not practical (e.g., respectively, cerebral parasite and blue whale). Others, there are miniatures for but your chance of finding one of these OOP rarities is virtually nil (e.g., Snake, Giant, Amphisbaena - C22 by Citadel). Finally, some are in a context not so useful for tactical representation (e.g., a chatting gynosphinx instead of one standing or threatening to attack or a mastadon with a huge howda when you need a wild mastadon):

I recall Grenadier included a free inivisible stalker miniature in their Comedy Lords box set.

Here's some monsters that are rarely done justice that I think people would love to see.

•        Bugbear (correctly proportioned)
•        Carrion Crawler
•        Demons (correctly proportioned; Type VI especially, although V probably represents the greatest challenge)
•        Dragon (Monster Manual / Sutherland style)
•        Ghoul (in suitably animated poses, crouching, pouncing, stalking, etc., instead of just a stand-around-zombie thing)
•        Giant Spider
•        Hobgoblins (with the intriguing Japanese armor overtones)
•        Hydra
•        Manticore (some compromise between Sutherland, Trampier from M&T and the S2 orange cover)
•        Ogre
•        Orcs (with swine-like features, but still realistic)
•        Owlbear (I've never been pleased with any; one like the B2 cover, less chubby and more muscular, would be great!)
•        Shadow (something evocative; I like the old Grenadier undead figure that's an animate robe without hands or face, for example)
•        Skeleton (the skulls tend to be exaggerated, the ribcages where all the detail is are rarely done right)
•        Slimes (that look animate and sculpted, as opposed to a cast-off)
•        Troll (Sutherland, again correctly proportioned)
•        Umber Hulk

A lot of those figures above were represented in the AD&D range that Citadel released in the mid-1980s.  They were nice figures (although I don't like the orcs), and if you want more info, my site at http://www.otherworld.me.uk is worth a look.  I particularly like the Bugbears, Carrion Crawler, Ogres and Trolls. The Hobgoblins are cool too.

Nice work on the list, Paul.  I'm surprised that you can't find a centaur mini, though!

Paul's list is quite complete... The only one creature that looks a bit out of place is the Aleax (unless each mini is produced with its own exact replica  :D ).

I was just wondering who sculpted the giants?  Was it the same person who did the idol?

I have picked up several of Reaper's demon figures and found them to be quite useful, Paul:  you may want to check them out.

@ otherworld or EoC:  have you ever considered sculpting the Terrible Iron Golem from WG5, based on Easley's illustration?  That would be a very cool mini to own! :D

Yes, it was Paul Muller.

Ah, I didn't realize that you didn't sculpt the idol yourself, otherworld---sorry for the confusion....

Howdy All,

Just back from KC - saw the Dead Sea scrolls exhibit - waheyyy cool!

I edited my list a bit. If anyone has a lead on a proper mini for any of them post away!

I have all of the Reaper ones that match so far. I have yet to see a really good purple worm (9' in diameter) or a properly scaled giant slug.

I mean has anyone ever sculpted a purple worm miniature that is 2" diameter and 10" long? Reaper's most recent one, which lacks eyes, is only a sub-adult, being merely 1" or 5' in diameter. (The plastic one by Wizbro I have not seen in person so I can't comment on it's scale.)

It has to be the all time classic of titanic D&D creatures but it has never had a properly scaled miniature!

Also, I have never seen a giant slug, like the one that appears in the Monster Manual or in D1:

Image

Now those slugs are as big as houses! All the ones produced so far have only been as big as a horse at most.

Paul

Thanks, all, for your feedback and suggestions.  The Hill and Stone Giants will soon be available to buy, and I'll post details here as soon as I have them.  The Frost and Fire Giants will follow in around a month.  I haven't yet decided whether to complete the set and produce Cloud and Storm Giant figures.  What do you guys think?

My next project for May/June will be pig-faced Orcs, as per the artwork on the opening page of the Holmes Blue D&D and the MM1 illustration.  I don't know why nobody else (since Minifigs, Essex, Akheton) has made these.  GW have a lot to answer for!

The Hill Giant and Stone Giant are now available for sale here:

eBay listings

MDC have (again) done a cracking job of the casting, and the figures are a real pleasure to paint.

STONE GIANT

Future plans include a Frost Giant and a Fire Giant, but I'm not yet sure whether we'll do the Cloud and Storm Giants.  Also on the way is a small range of old-school D&D-style Pig-faced Orcs by Bob Olley.

The green for my new Frost Giant, again sculpted by Paul Muller.  He should be available in a couple of weeks (the Frost Giant, not Paul).

Absolutely, especially if you offer a "buy the set discount" for folks taking a beating in the dollar vs. the pound exchange rate :D
