Hello,

does anyone know how many different prints it exists for the TW boxed set? I got 2 copies and the cover are different for each book, and the text on the box (sides and back) is black for one, and brown for the other.

Thanks

I believe 3, but I maybe confusing that with the boardgame boxset, so don't quote me on it :)

I thought there was only 2 different prints but I haven't really focused on that line yet.

I thought we'd discussed printings before recently, but I can't find it via search :(

Random thoughts:

- first printing box lid lacks Origins Award starburst
- first printing booklets are paper vs. cardstock covers and may have had 2 of the Players Guides in the box
- haven't checked for catalog differences....

I've got a copy with the brown writing on side and back.

Has in oval on front "Winner Best Role-Playing Adventure, H G Wells Award   Strategists Club Award  Game Designers' Guild Select Award"

Also
Back states in top left (above 'th' in "thieves' ") - second edition.

The one with the black text is exactly the same. So the only differences between these 2 boxed sets seems to be the color of the text and the cardstock cover for booklets.

And what about the first edition? What does it look like?

I have two copies that I now think are 2nd and 3rd prints.  The actual content appears to be the same.

1st Print
* Paper covers on booklets
* Does not state Second Edition on back top left corner?

2nd Print
* Cover lacks Winner Best Role-Playing Adventure H.G. Wells ...
* The left long side of box has thieves' world in big letters down the side, Chaosium logo and stock number 2007-X at the bottom.
* The right long side of box has thieves' world stepped like the TSR logo in a 2 inch box, and a description
* Maze maps inside have a brownish filler
* Text inside books is also brown
* Cover of Personalities of Sanctuary has a blue/purple picture
* States Second Edition on back top left corner

3rd Print
* Cover has Winner Best Role-Playing Adventure H.G. Wells ...
* The right long side of box has thieves' world in big letters down the side, Chaosium logo and stock number 2007-X at the bottom.
* The left long side of box has thieves' world stepped like the TSR logo in a 2 inch box, and a description
* Maze maps inside have a greyish filler
* Text inside books is dark grey/black
* Cover of Personalities of Sanctuary has a red picture
* States Second Edition on back top left corner

Looking on Ebay right now,

I also see that there is a print between the two I have listed above that has the box with no Winner bubble but has the Red Personalities book and maps look like they are black ink.  This would probably fit in between my 2nd and 3rd prints.

And it seems to be two 3rd print...

My 2 boxes are similar to the 3rd print, but one has brown text and the other black.
The brown one has booklets like your 2nd print but Maze maps inside have a grey filler (and not brown) and Text inside books is black (and not brown). However they don't have cardstock cover and the Personnalities is blue...

It seems to be very complicated  :?

I have this but the bottom of the box does not state Second Edition on the back (also I only have 1 players guide, even though the intro sheet states the box should have 2)

To continue from collecting appraisal:

Mars wrote:I think there are basically 3 different versions but a few more variations where you a book/map might be different.

My paper cover books are in a box with 2nd edition stated on the back and with award star.
So at least 3 different boxed sets, one without the award star and 2 with it on the front.
4 prints?

Does anyone see a 1st ed. once?

Now I'm even more confused.   :D

Should we try to take a real stab at this?

Maybe if everyone interested lists what they have on hand, we could figure it out (like the recent MM research thread).

It looks like the factors are:

booklet cover stock - paper or card
booklet cover ink colors - list your variations...
logo on side of box - black or brown
above logo on back cover of box- second edition or not
box front cover - HG Wells award logo or no logo
booklet text - brown or black
number of players' guides - one or two
maze map filler - brown or grey

Anything else?

My copy:

booklet cover stock - card
booklet cover ink colors - player brown, gm green, personalities purple
logo on side of box - brown
above logo on back cover of box- second edition
box front cover - no logo
booklet text - brown
number of players' guides - one
maze map filler - brown

Well I can only go by what I wrote above at the time (since I can't get to my copy now) but rereading it am curious if I have a "1st printing".

I think the printing goes something like this:

1st print are the paper covers and box does not say second edition?

Then for the second edition, I believe the books and maps had 2 different print runs:

1st: maps have the brownish filler
2nd: maps have greyish filler

1st: Personalities of Sanctuary has a blue/purple picture
2nd: Personalities of Sanctuary has a red picture

1st: Box lacks "Winner ..."
2nd: Box has "Winner ..."

There are sets that are completely made of 1st items and other sets of all 2nd items.  However, I have seen a number of sets that are a mix of 1st and 2nd items as well.

We can add Cover of Personalities of Sanctuary blue/purple picture

My copies have 2 different combinations:

booklet cover stock - cardboard
Cover of Personalities of Sanctuary: purple with picture on the left side
Cover of GM guide: green with picture on the middle
Cover of Players' guide: brown, picture take all the cover
logo on side of box - brown
above logo on back cover of box- second edition
box front cover - HG Wells award logo
booklet text - black
number of players' guides - one (the included  list of content stated only one book)
maze map filler - grey
And an add with chaosium products where the TW boxed set is pictured with these booklets (and only one PG) and the award logo

The other copy

booklet cover stock - paper
Cover of Personalities of Sanctuary: Blue with a different picture on the left
Cover of GM guide: green with no picture
Cover of Players' guide:  purple with no picture
logo on side of box - black
above logo on back cover of box- second edition
box front cover - HG Wells award logo
booklet text - black
number of players' guides - one (the included  list of content stated only one book)
maze map filler - grey
And an add with chaosium products where the TW boxed set is pictured with these booklets (and only one PG) and the award logo

Does not match with Mark previous post  :? (one box was bought new, the brown one)

We also need to account for the possibility of Frankensteining over a couple decades.
