Greg Stafford is selling a copy of White Bear & Red Moon. I wonder if his reserve will be met? As hot as this game usually is I don't see the point of a reserve.

That really pushes the line at the bottom of his auction: "...from the collection of Greg Stafford..."  There is a certain amount of vanity required when you can buy and resell items only adding your autograph in order to increase its value.  Hence the reserve price.

Greg has posted here before; maybe he'll stop by again and let us know if there's something we're missing. But it looks like an assembly line of buy product-add signature-sell product to me.

I've never begrudged someone trying to turn a buck or two, and lord knows I've enjoyed many of Greg's creative efforts ... but, I gotta admit, I'm just not real wild about this latest development. It's not the end of the world either way, but I won't be placing any bids.

Maybe not interesting to many of you, but I find this item to be pretty cool:

Shadowrun 4th Edition Limited Collector's Edition

And another one

Other one

And Ghostbusters.

Probably not a huge deal to you guys, but I've not seen a copy of that game, anywhere, since it was released. I think I'll bid on it...

He turned a nice profit on the recent Wyrms Footnotes #1 - I think he paid about $200 for it, resold with autograph for $350.

Like Xaxaxe said, nothing terribly immoral about it - but it's unlikely I'll be placing any bids either.

Regards

Mike

Isn't buying a rare and reselling it for a higher price what others have been bashed for in the past?

Yes they have.

I am actually surprised about this - does he need the money that badly?

He is only turning over a few items each week, and he (presumably) is spending plenty of time searching for rares.  Despite the occasional big(ish) profit, his hourly rate is doubtfully that good.  I know that you don't get much money for rpg writing (see endless threads on Y-S.com, rpg.net  and elsewhere), but I would assume his name would have edged him into a few decent contracts if he wanted...

I can't figure out what is wrong with that.

Why is that bad?

The only thing that I don't like about it is the last statement of his auctions that states it is from his personal collection.  I guess that is true but it has only been in his personal collection for a week.

"personal collection" gives the buyer an indication that there's 1 or a very limited # of the items available. Hence the very large bids...

Essentially you're paying maybe $100.00 + for an auto  :?

As long as we're being honest, that's the part that bothers me, too. "Personal collection?" Yeah, I guess ... for a few days.

Meh. No bids from me. I won't be a part of it.

Well, hell, if this autograph thing works, I've got some stuff I could sell off (nowhere near those numbers in value) that just might be worth doing... heh.

Signatures don't generally seem to add much value to an item.  I think part of what come across from these auctions is the impression that these were his personal copies from 25 - 30 years ago and thus may also have some historical significance rather than these are copies that I bought two weeks ago and signed.

Speaking of which, anyone know what the general going price for copies of the core The Fantasy Trip rulebooks is? (Advanced Melee, Advanced Wizard, In the Labyrinth)

They had gone through a real low-ish swing the last time I checked ... which, admittedly, was probably more than a year ago. From the glory days of $40 to $60 for each individual book, they were selling for $20 to $30.

What's odd is that good-looking copies of the basic system (Melee and Wizard) actually are very much on the upswing. More proof that all things on eBay are cyclical, I guess.
