Poll: Which text format would you prefer in a Pied Piper "Bottle City" level publication?

Edit the text fully to make it standard English, and expand abbreviations, add contextual details, reference rules where appropriate, etc. 67%       67%  [ 26 ]

Greyhawk and its gods, place names, etc. are product identity of WotC and can't be used as-is without permission:  we can certainly ask for permission, and if that doesn't work, I'm sure we can come up with creative work-arounds.

I just thought of this...

Since it's widely known that the Greyhawk material produced for TSR was not the same Greyhawk campaign that Rob and Gary actually campaigned in, why not just refer to it as "Kuntz's/Gygax's Personal Greyhawk Campaign" or "The Original Greyhawk" or something? Since this would be based on the personal campaign that Rob and Gary played in and co-created, and is a historical document, it wouldn't be breaking copyright, would it?  

And as mbassoc2003 said, if done in the past tense, this would be merely a retrospective, a historical documentation of the personal campaign of two people, not the GH owned by TSR (now WOTC). Would that not avoid copyright issues?

Well, if I played an extensive campaign in ERK, and I had a claim to have been party to it's creation, I could write that as I recalled, this happenned, that happened, this charater was present, that character did this or that, such and such a notable NPC was written into the adventure here and then this happenned.

If it were my description of the adventure and how it played out, and I produced a map to supplement it, the only copyright infringement I would be guilty of is redrawing a map I did not own. That is something you don't have to worry about.

Provided everything you write is a recollection of history from your point of view, no matter what you write or in how much detail, you are untouchable.

PPP sees the product as a dual-offering, one for the collector side with all of its commentary, original reproductions of text and maps, asides, cogent historical references from the time, etc.

The other is as a playable product produced in some degree or the other, and that form will of course be dictated by demand, with direction favoring polls such as these.

Within the context of the adventure offering, in whatever lesser or greater form that this gets offered to the consumer, we have direct reference to the nine, with names.  This is a major encounter area as well.  This will, IMO, have to resculpted.  The commentary I am already aware can be done as a retrospective without worry, and we make no claims to WotC's IP, nor will any of their TM/IP appear on the cover of the proposed work, but still the same, that begs a big question when such an encounter is presented for use in a gaming format.  That would be a direct violation of IP in that context and so PPP must seek a work around for the "adventure" part, that's the bottom line.

Rob, why not just make up a new group to substitute for The Nine in the encounters of the game aspect of it, then just put in a historical reference, ie "In our games back in the 70's, this is where we fought The Nine".  

That way it's just a reference to the historical aspect of the book, and not "meant" to be included as an actual encounter.  :wink:

Or would that work?  :?

We are considering all of the great input form the members here and elsewhere and will reach a final descision soon enough.  There is no rushing this, besides, the level and notes have been around for 30 years (-/+) so why should there be?
