I agree that in the real world this would be a very real issue that could, potentially, kill a product immediately.  Even if you watermarked the scans, used DRM or other annoying-the-user software security, at best you'll delay the appearance of the cracked files on P2P networks.

I think that the best way to safeguard against devaluation for a (theoritical) product like this is for the data itself to be just one component in the value of the set.  As someone pointed out in the DF thread, the Dragon Magazine .pdf files are available all over the place on the net, but the original Archive CDs still sell for quite a bit.  So, having a professionally-printed CD with packagaing, etc. is one step to preserve value for the purchaser/collector.  In addition, printing a signed/numbered limited edition may help, as would a high-quality product (printed on fine archival paper, for example).  While a scan could still capture the information and details (nothing would prevent that), that then becomes the key differentiation between reading an ERB "Princess of Mars" text file from Project Gutenberg vs. holding a first edition with dust jacket in your hand.  Some folks will certainly be willing to settle for the text file, but you can't put it on your shelf, or enjoy the experience of reading it nearly as much as you can a real book.

I certainly welcome more input from folks here on these kinds of issues!

Well, in any event I sure am interested and hope it comes to fruition.  Like I said earlier I would be glad to just have the notes or the finished product for that matter, irregardless of how it is decided upon.

IF I were asked to pay in the $100 range, I would expect "archival quality" maps and professional layout, and no headgames about different editions or volumes I, II and III....no "additional lost materials."  For that price I want all of it.

I might be more interested, however, in the hand drawn maps and the original notes, even in electronic version, so I can see the original.

Consider what it is about Arneson's First Fantasy Campaign that makes it a collector favorite.

And, how about a special deal with WOTC to allow Gary to use the Greyhawk name on this one, special project.

I wonder why not?  No old animosities should be left with the current owners.  Cash is the only issue.

they spent enough time and effort burying everything of old, i highly doubt they would want it to resurface again.

and as well with cash, if that had to be a deciding factor too, the amount of money this project would have to make to "balance the books" would be beyond its possible worth imo.

but hey, you never know!

Mark, if I ever play the lottery, and then win, I'll buy Greyhawk from Hasbro and then we'll see some fun! :D  Until, then....

Man, I've had that same thought, only it had to do with buying up all rights to all Robert E. Howard properties, then issuing a multi-volume "Complete Works of REH" ... you know, totally definitive, pure-text only, with illustrations from Frazetta, Ken Kelley, Boris Vallejo ... and essays from current Howard scholars and old-timers like Glenn Lord and Roy Thomas.

**sigh**

Sorry, big topic-lurch there ... I need to say something on-topic.

Okay, I agree with M-Ship: cash will solve a lot of problems.  :)
