I have a whole cigar box of old dice, including one of the old soft ones with rounded corners, and two more of them still in plastic. Also have some odd ones, and one set of Japanese Standards D20s in original plastic screw-lid box and have a custom made leather box for them as well.

Who collects this stuff?

Hi Kaskoid --

If any of the "old soft ones" are the classic polyhedrals (yellow d4, red d6, green d8, blue d12 and white d20), I'd be happy to make an offer regardless of condition/rollability.

They're not just any dice, they're Tim Kask's dice.  Probably can't fit a signature on 'em, but maybe a fingerprint on a d6...  :)

And no, you can't have too many dice.

would they have just been in one of them basic sets or something?

dunno what i am gonna do with em like...didnt even know they were there! must have picked them up in a lot many moons ago or something...

Here they are. The lower D20s have had the numbers filled in with the old wax crayons. There are a couple odd ones that had "mysterious outcomes"; the old soft ones are in the upper right on white. There is a pewter? one, a brass one, real D10s with the round edges. I even have a set of the Armoury D30s still in the bag with the booklet. The real small D20s were waxed by me. The Japanese Standards are in the clear box on top of the leather carrier a friend made for me.

We called the old low impact dice, "tank dice."  I'm not sure why...possibly because the original d20 ended up looking like a battered tank...or possibly because one of our knicked and dented d6 was perfect for cheating at Squad Leader.

Dice are spirits of great power...easily offended, and powerful within their own realm.  8O   So say the ancients.

The early 20-sided dice had two sets of digits 0-9, so people would routinely color in one set of 0-9 for 11-20.

Yes!  Good detail!  The high-tech, new-fangled idea of double digits was a later invention.

As a matter of fact, most of my high impact dice still in service are marked with what I call "leopard marks" to distinguish the tens.  I ruled that all such dice in my games had to be marked that way years ago when my players kept "forgetting" which color was supposed to be the teens.

(The low impact dice were long ago taken out of service.)

Recently, I had a player question my use of a d20 as a d10.  It had to be explained to him that one simply ignores the dots.

The d10 was a later introduction when (apparently) guys could not generate 1-100 results without someone holding their hand.  Geez!

A set with two d20's would therefore indicate a slightly later variant set, as the second d20 was added later for help in percentile rolls.

Another indicator of the age of a given dice set might be the color of the various dice.  As I recall, the early colors went like this:

d20 - White
d12 - Blue
d8 -   Green
d6 -   Pink
d4 -   Yellow

I also recall some pink d20's from somewhat later sets...possibly intended as the tens in a percentile dice set.

Of course, I am also a geek enough to name my main set of dice....three d20's for generating bite/claw/claw.

Red d20 - "Glitcher" (Purchased at Endgames in downtown Portland.)
Yellow d20 - "Glotcher" (Purchased at hobby shop in Oregon City.)
Brown d20 - "Glutch" (Found in the street.)

Laugh away, but my gamers remember these fell names with dread lo these many years gone by.

There was no set color for the old D20s.

We bought direct from Hong Kong and got boxes that were approx. 3 to 4 feet square, filled with loose dice. I have no idea how many thousand were in each box. I do remember that they were mixed colors: pink, white, and  blue were the predominant colors, although there were sometimes some in yellow and a darker pink that was almost red. They were usually so few that they got snagged for employees and friends. As best as I recall; that was nearly 30 years ago.

I can remember a box that came in very shortly after we had moved into the house on Main. The box had been heavily damaged and was more tape than cardboard. In trying to get it open, one of the repairs gave way and we had D20s every damn where; all over two rooms, down in cold-air registers, in the hall closet--we found them for days.

Sort of like the d20's had it all planned from the beginning!

Isn't is fascinating how those d20's were just a nuisance back then, but if you could find them and certify their history, each one would be worth many times their original value today?
