+3 trivia points each:  If you can name the Japanese movie monster(s) that likely inspired this piece.

Hi darkseraphim,

I am going to go for the +3 trivia point category.

Is it the devil beast Guiron, from the Japanese movie "Gamera tai daiakuju Giron," which was dubbed into English and released as "Attack of the Monsters." ???

Those plastic monsters would be awesome to find.  Where the heck would a person even look to find them?
I would bet that they would fetch a pretty penny on eBay if someone knew what they were and advertised them!

Well, let's see.

Trivia points:
Bclarkie 4
Deadlord 7
Formcritic 3
Hermitfrompluto 3
Kamelion 3
Plaag 1 (first respondent)

I'm not sure if they're still being made, but Asian-produced toys are a funny thing.  Molds get imitated, stolen, sold, and "rediscovered" at an amazing rate.  In fact in some fields I collect (Micronauts, for example), you'll find a legal toy and an illegal one produced at the same time, in two different countries, and they're exactly the same.

So keep an eye out!  They may still be made.  If you needed an excuse to hit ToysRUs, KayBee, or the local supermarket toy aisle, this is it.

I had one of those rust monster toys as a kid, and when I got my first D&D set I was like, so that's what that is!

I just noticed this thread. Coincidentally, I was just discussing these plastic toys on Dragonsfoot. I posted some photos of the other monsters that came in the same set. See this thread:

I think the seller must have a case of these.  This is the 3rd or 4th one I have seen them auction.

It was the complete set of Series 2 transfers.  Those are damn hard to find.  If I didn't have a set already, I would have bid WAY more than $80.  8O

Huh?  :?

These things, and I mean all of them, pop up on Ebay all the time.  They are just as common as the Monster Cards sets and they are both less interesting(IMO) and less useful.

I agree.  They are pretty common.  I am still missing 1600-4 but there has been one of these for sale for a long time at $12 which is about $10 too much for me.  I think the most I have paid is $3 for a package.  There were a number of 1500 and 1600 sets sold last year in the $15 range for the set of 4.  $80+ for 7 sets is just ridiculous.

The Series 1 stuff, with the purple card banners, are very common, yes.  The Series II tranfers, with the red card banner, are MUCH more rare, and finding all 4 in a single auction is worth a premium.

Maybe you missed it. The first time it was listed:

** expired/removed eBay auction **

No bids.

And the second time:

** expired/removed eBay auction **

As far as them being worth more as listed as a set, I guess I don't get it. I mean you may be able to save yourself a bit more cash on shipping if you buy them together versus seperate, but other than that I don't see much  of a difference.

The second series is harder to find than the first but I don't think any of them are rare.  Various packages come up at least every few months.  Although often enough the seller wants too much for them.

This set (the one that I am missing):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 8763780144

has been up for over a year now but at $12 no one wants it.

Not that it matters greatly, but ... why in the world would a thread called "TSR Kitsch" be placed in the "Non-TSR" category?

It's stuff like this that keeps me up at night ... :)

Probably for the exact same reason that people put things in the "Interesting Non-TSR Items on Ebay" thread like Boot Hill, Gamma World, Star Frontiers, etc.  Which is exactly.......ummm wait a sec...ummm...I don't know either.
