Help me on this one:

How many different Moorcock-inspired games has Chaosium put out?

The list as far as I can sort it:

1)  Stormbringer
2)  Elric
3)  Eternal Champion
4)  Dragonriders of Melnibone (D20 Supplement)

Can anyone enlighten me as to which game system is which?

Also, which additional publications go under each heading?

Stormbringer was the first that Chaosium put out. It was designed by Ken St. Andre (of Tunnels and Trolls fame) and Steve Perrin. Although it was based on Chaosium's BRP system, I remember thinking at the time that there were certain things that reminded me of T&T - not surprising considering who wrote it.

Unfortunately I've never owned anything else that you ask about, so I don't know much else, but IIRC Elric and Eternal Champion were published around the same time. I think that EC was based on another Moorcock character, possibly Dorian Hawkmoon or Erekose.

Sorry I can't tell you more.

Elric the wargame was the first Chaosium MM title, and was published in at least two editions by Chaosium, and then again by Avalon Hill (although that may be a different game than the Chaosium one, I'm not sure).

Then came Stormbringer (later retitled to Elric, then back to Stormbringer in the most recent edition, I think).  The d20 Dragonriders and one or two other d20 books are supposed to be compatible with both Elric/Stormbringer and d20, IIRC.

In addiiton, there was a Dorian Hawkmoon title published c. 1987, but I don't think it was from Chaosium.  I'm pretty sure it is compatible with the Chosium BRP Eternal Champion titles.

Isn't there a game called Eternal Champions with both Elric and Hawkmoon product lines?  I get confused on whether or not Elric and Stormbringer are the same.  The answer seems to be yes and no.

I have a copy of 4th edition Stormbringer (how could I not buy it at 99 cents?).  It does not seem to be real rules-heavy.  The artwork is great.    :)

I also have the d20 Dragonriders of Melnibone' publication....which is pretty good.

I have always liked Chaosium's style.  Their artwork and design looks professional without being too slick.   8)

Why is Elric always depicted with no pants?  Is there some line in the books that says Elric always goes about in a loincloth?  When i see Elric I always wonder who does his costumes.  Doesn't it chafe to ride dragons and the like without your drawers on?

"Elric, you might want to put on some pants...if you plan to destroy the world...today."

Hey:

I am re-posting on this strand because I really do want to know...

Can anyone out there tell me if the Chaosium games, Elric, Eternal Champion, Hawkmoon, Stormbringer and the like are different names for the same game or entirely different games?

I need more detail.  Someone must know.

Mark---

I know Stormbringer was renamed Elric for the 5th edition of the game, but I don't recall if it was switched back recently or not; a quick trip to the Chaosium site should help there.

You might also consider posting the Q over in MM's Terminal Cafe forum, on www.multiverse.org @ http://www.multiverse.org/forum27.html which is where the rpg-related MM discussion goes (although many of the recent posts are silly and off-topic).

Think of them as 1st Ed AD&D, 2nd Ed. 3rd Ed., Planescape, Dark Sun, etc.

I've followed the game since I participated in playtesting the rules before publication.

I prefer the earlier rules to the later ones.  Scenario packs are uneven in quality, but some are very good.

Try this page:

Can't say it's complete, but it might sort out some questions.

I have no idea why the gods of Ebay (Lords of the Ether Auctions?) allowed me to win The Octagon of Chaos for 99 cents.

This Theatre of the Mind publication...1986...under license from Chaosium...is  really damn good.

I just got it today.  Most impressed.  Good artwork.  Nice layout and printing standards.  Good storyline.

I'm gonna squirrel away this baby until 2026, when the International Federation of Obsessed Collectors pays $1 million to buy it from my cyberclone.

Octagon of Chaos is the only Elric item I own and it is damn good; pretty much can't go wrong with Theatre of the Mind products (and Chaosium for that matter).  And at 99 cents you definitely got a bargain, congrats!

It seems like I have something else from Theatre of the Mind.  What other things did they publish?

I am close to the conclusion of my Stormbringer/Elric/Eternal Champion quest.

I only need a couple items to be done.

What I want to know is if anyone has a good suggestion where to post my research.

I want to post a history of this game line.  Are there any websites out there that might be interested in a scholarly contribution to game history?

Post it to Wikipedia. I know some here have a strong distaste for it but that would be an excellent venue for your findings.

Or Ian's afterglow2 site.  Or email the info to Tadashi and he may consider publishing it on the DWP site.  Or.... :D
