I won this lot of books yesterday. Anyone know what the Player's Tome of Creation is? I couldn't find it in Heroic Worlds.

Definitely looks home brewish to me. ALmost like a single subject notebook with some stenciling done.

FWIW, that kind of plastic spiral binding vs. the old combed binding seems newer vs. older.

Wow! I received the Player's Tome of Creation today. It is the most elaborate and involved "homemade" RPG item I have ever seen. It consists of over 108 pages that have been "semi-professionally" printed out. Most of the typeset is caligraphy and there are numerous charts, tables and even a few pics.

The book has no date on it, though the author does sign his name on the Preface page: James M Marshall II. He states that this is the first book of an RPG game he has created. I have only scanned it so far, but it a fantasy RPG with many elements taken from D&D (as you might imagine).

I took a bunch of pics in case anyone is interested. Pretty cool!

Looks like a nice find. Does it have any indication of a publication date?

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

I don't know how stringent D&D publishers are about these things, but the general layout screams "desktop publishing in some guys basement" to me. I doubt it was published in the current draft. Perhaps he took his work and had it professionally printed & bound, though.

It does look desktop probably circa 1990's. Looks like other zines and items from that period. It is certainly a very nicely realized homebrew item but keep in mind nearly 50% of all nonTSR could be called 'homebrew' under those standards.

A pretty nice amateur publication. I wonder how many of them he made?

There are probably several dozen or so copies sitting in the closets of his gaming buddies. :lol:

I like the erstz-eldritch type fonts...but I usually curse when I find a new purchase has been printed in some silly, impossible to read font.

Anyone do a web search on the author?

Looks pretty much like standard Apple Mac fonts to me; as does the clip art.

@ Adam; the only things that would stop me from thinking earlier are the green underprint on the "Acknowledgment" and (possibly) the "ten years" quote.

@ Allan; yep, is more like a Uni repro department style binding from more recent times, but spiral binding (a/o comb binding) goes a long way back even though it was more used for notebooks and suchlike then (as noted by Brian), rather than amateur RPG productions

@ BTB; if you tell me it's a great piece of work and enthalling reading, I'll take your word for it. What I can see (and the general layout, etc.) doesn't look particularly promising, IMHO!

(roll some "(D-6's)" "and if you make it this far, you can start to play the Game". *g* hardly looks like C&S chargen to me ^^)
