That's a good call; it was actually my second guess.  :)

But I'm still looking for something more similar ... the poses of the characters, the background, etc. I swear it's out there somewhere.

Of course, it's entirely possible that this mystery piece of artwork is in a reality that exists solely inside my own head ...

What was your first guess?

The more I think about it, the more it's bugging me.  I think you're right, and there is a piece of art much more similar.  Maybe interior art from one of the hardcovers?

Yeah, upon re-reading, that ended up being not very clear.

My second guess: T1, green cover;

My first guess: Whichever piece of art it is that we're trying to find. If only I knew what it was ...  :)

Oh, I see what you meant.  You've convinced me it's out there, and my gut thinking is that it has a medusa in it (perhaps with legs, though) and also that it's an interior black-and-white illustration.  I could be totally off, but I want some credit should we locate it and I'm correct about that much :).

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that I'm associating it with something that was non-TSR ... a comic book, a piece of gaming art from a different company, an encyclopedia ... who knows?

It's funny, though, how quickly I thought of old-school TSR when I saw the Goodman Games image. But I'm now less confident. For one thing, I just did some fairly thorough searches of Otus and Dee art that I have on file and came up with a big blank (and Dee was my first instinct).

I dunno, I still think it's TSR.  And that helmet does look really familiar, now that I think about it.  One of the TSR artists (maybe not one of the big ones), used to draw a lot of helmets like that.  Of course, it is a historical type of helmet (the name of which escapes me right now).  I'm going to flip through some books once everyone's asleep...

I thought it was a new Dee piece when I saw it. I don't recognize it as any thing particular; just seems remisicent of his style.

My first reaction was T1 as well.  Maybe also a bit of the green-cover S1.

That was what I thought right away - "oh yeah, obviously the Tomb of Horrors.  Same green cover, but the Medusa in place of the Lich."

Yeah, I see that, but the "camera angle" is closer to T1.  I don't have it right in front of me, but isn't the S1 perspective from over the lich's shoulder downward?  Maybe the DCC artist's mind is as much a soup of these images as ours are, and no specific homage is intended?

Me, too — after double-checking T1, my thoughts went straight to the A's.

My quote-unquote "collection," sadly, contains only A1 at the moment. In the past, I have owned A2, A3, and A4, but I cannot swear as to what art they might or might not have contained.

Does anyone out there in Acaeum-land want to page through their copies real quick? Thanks in advance.

I've got to get to bed (east coast), but here's a link to the Dee illustrations in the A-series.  Nothing there by him that looks close, though.  I'll check my A2, 3, & 4 ASAP tomorrow.

There is an image inside of C2 that is similar, but it is still somewhat different.   The image I am referring to is of two adventures (a guy in a helmet and a woman IIRC) coming up from behind a medusa who happens to be in a hooded robe.  This picture could perhaps be what happened after these adventures discovered the hooded person was not a person after all.  :wink:

For some reason it reminds me of the orange cover of S2. Not a match of course but the general position of the monster vs. the characters.
