In the Dragon Dice ad (which looks like it is dated 1981), it says its D20 is the only one labeled 1-20. How long was this the case?

Well dicecollector.com has Armory blister packs with d20s numbered 1 to 20 and dated 1985.

I've seen blisters from Gamescience dated 1986 containing sets of 6 where the d20 was numbered 0 to 9 twice with half the digits marked with a "+".

Nice video interview with James Ward on Kevin Blume and the "Hong Kong dice".

These blisters are from 1985 but I think I have had some 1983 or 84 that were also numbered 1-20:

Maybe the easiest way to tell a "Mentzer" die from a "Moldvay" die is the flat-topped "3".

-I have a pair of 10-sided percentile dice from a 1982 (face logo) Star Frontiers box with the flat-top 3.

-I also have a set with flat-top 3s, where the D8 is longer than it is wide. The dice are different colors, instead of all one color. Would this fit the description of Mentzer-era dice?

He finally released them on his page, $40 a set and that doesn't get you a Pink One. A Percentile Set is $16. I guess for that price they are inked but doesn't include shipping. I might sound a little cheapskate-ish but I'm not real excited about getting them at that price.

Yeah, for a set of dice, that is REALLY pricey. $10 yes, $15 if they are really high quality, but $40? No thanks.

An interesting score by one of the members of the dice collecting Group on Facebook I'm in. Might be the oldest set of Modern d20s. If not oldest, they would be close to it.

Removed dead link :(

Throwback Thursday: The Oldest Modern d20 - 20 Faces of Fate20 Faces of Fate

It looks like there were different "printings" of these dice. Check out how the number "9" differs slightly on the eBay acquired set versus the image from the Kevin Cook set. The "back" of the 9 goes just above the loop in the Kevin Cook set, while it stops at the loop in the eBay set.

Very cool history though ...

"Okay, we turn the corner and see a Purple 'WHAT' !?!" . . (the DM rolls a 20 or so he says) . . It all went black right after that.

Yeah, I noticed it too and when Kevin saw it he was really confused.

Figured it'd be ok to revive my old post for my further adventures of dice collecting. Merry Christmas everyone!

Ran into this and HAD to go on it earlier this year

Took me a while to get around to cleaning them up. Ended up having the missing d20s and gem d4 in my spares, so lucked out there  :)

Thought I'd share 'em here in their unwashed glory!!!

Oh, in case you're interested to know - -  guessed on the seller pics, bad as they were, that the decals on the Orc Dice were near perfect, and they were! Only one number of one die had a tiny nick out of all six dice. That assumption had a lot to do with my bid obviously, anyway...

Enjoy! Soon as I saw them, thought they'd make a great period DM's Set. Possibly having more value as a whole???

Be neat to find out if that's a complete set of Opaque colors for that year GameScience?

I guess I should list my bag of random extra dice and see what happens.

I did not get a Saved-Search email from Ebay for this item, because I had saved a search for "Creative Publications" in quote marks, which missed 'Publication,' singular. A $700 item, & the seller couldn't even bother to spell it right.
