Who was your source for these? You could PM me if you wish. I'm just interested. I picked up a couple of 'fake' fanzines and cross checked with Brette. Mine are definate fakes. I'm just curious about your seller.

You're right. Lou always stuck his stickers over everything. As for PoVQ, we don't know how many fakes are running around out there, and we haven't found a way of confirming whether any are fake, and how to identify them. If there are any fakes, I'd bet on the ones without the two tone grid.

Ditto everything Brian said, I bought these from the same source. They look exactly the same as the one's that Brian described. The Tavern is definitely not a "photocopy" but a printing...not as sure about the MH item. They would be very easy to duplicate, though. It's just the motive that would make no sense. If you were going to make "fakes' this good, why not try some Wee Warriors items instead, and make a little cash. I think these were something like $10 buck each. What kind of profit is the guy making off these? Anyway, whether or not they are a copy or a printing it's really immaterial, they are not valuable enough to worrry about either way, and they are very cool little items.

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen far more often. Hard to find item, but not exactly getting premium prices, non-tsr, are ripe for exploitation in this way. Specifically, stuff like Midkemia, Arduin modules, The Companions, Castle Thrax, Serpent Isle, Stones of the Selt, Starstone, other one shots, etc, unless someone who owns the rights to them was to raise an uproar it seems someone who brought one of these to a Kinkos and made premium quality copies and sold them could pretty much get away with it for awhile.

The original staple marks on the photocopies pretty much seals it. Someone took apart a Tavern and photocopied it. The pinkies are fakes. As to who made them, that might take a bit of work, but I suggest every pinkie owner try to recollect where they got it, and cross-reference the info.

I originally asked about Tavern because I didn't recall mine having maps in it (though it did). Guess I inadvertently opened a can of rot grubs.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

Hey, these things are fun to thrash out. It's not like a bunch of us got stung buying counterfeit POTVQ's. I don't feel like I wasted my $10-$20 or whatever I paid, now if I had dropped several hundred on a fake Tamoachan, well......

Once again, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often with more valuable items. The pros out there making counterfeit $20's with $10k printing equipment, well if they just knew how much Wee Warriors stuff was going for, they could make just as much money and not have to dodge the FBI......!

Mike, it's possible that by avoiding the higher-ticket items, the counterfeitters are able to fly under folks' radar much more easily: why risk your bread and butter theft items by trying to forge a Tsojconth or something similar?

FWIW, I am actually still pretty confident that the Compleat Tavern Badmike and myself have are legit. I think that the jury is still out on the MHD though.

That's true, which is why I also speculated as to why no one was counterfeiting such items as Midkemia and The Companions, which sell for middling prices yet are made cheaply enough that counterfeits would be difficult to detect unless you could compare them to the originals. On the other hand, you would only have to forge ONE Tsojoncth for every, say, 100 Taverns you'd have to do. How many of us that would like a Tsojoncth have actually SEEN or owned one before and could immediately tell it was a fake? I've never actually seen on in person and I'm considered a long time collector, and if I bought one cheap at a garage sale or flea market it would take a little time for me to actually see if the item was legit. If this happened on an Ebay sale, by the time a guy actualy found out the item was fake (if he ever did, unless he was a member of this forum or really knew his rare D&D items he might never find out) the seller could be long gone. It's happened before (aka Jonb's reign of terror last summer) where a guy sells a lot of stuff then suddenly disappears.

I've been examining it all day and I have to agree (already wasted more time on it than I should, oh well!). The amount of effort applied to print this, if it were a counterfeit, is astounding vs the payoff for doing so. I.e. it would be like having the machinery available to run counterfeits of Amazing Spiderman #1 but instead deciding to make fakes of some random Archie comic instead. It makes no sense for someone to spend this much time and effort on something that will net them about 5 bucks a copy when said and done when they could be applying this time and effort to print up some Arduin Dungeons or Thieve's Guild modules (I have copies of all of these, and believe me it would take about half the effort to print up fakes of either of these game system's items).

If the item were a counterfeit, wouldn't we expect the culprit to be at least intelligent enough to:

a) Use the same color cover instead of a strikingly variant color?

b) Bother to conceal the original staple holes?

It seems to me that both of these glaring details are easy to fix and could hardly have escaped the notice of someone who was trying to counterfeit an old, $5 gaming accessory.

The very people such a counterfeit would interest would also be the very people most likely to spot the deception.

The counterfeit theory does not seem to make sense.

More likely, these oddities are the result of printing decisions made by Gamelords personnel.

I must admit to being pleased with this one; it's getting harder and harder to find those elusive eBay "bargains."

We LOVED that game when we were younger! We used to play it during school lunch hour, those cool pocket games were very convenient for bringing to school. In high school we had a lunchroom with way too much room and too many tables, so the back table by the dumpsters was reserved for gaming geeks and you could have as many as half a dozen pickup D&D and wargames going during lunch time at our high school, which because of so many students was staggered into three periods (so sometimes kids would skip class to play games all three lunch periods...). Anyway, the pocket games were big hits because you could easily get in a game in an hour, and my copy of Sheboygan got quite a workout. Soon we noticed the monster always won, so we gave the humans all the troops. Then the humans won, so we made more monsters that just one. Then, someone noticed the boards to one of his WWII boardgames was the same hexsize....hmmmm....before you could say "Hey, what's Godzilla doing in Berlin?" we had invented our own WWII version of Creature where the monster nasty would be goosestepping all over WWII Germany with desperate attempts by the Panzer divisions and Luftwaffe to put him to rest. We even added special rules and units like "Buzz Bombs" and "Experimental A-Bomb" (seems the German high command was farther along than anyone thought). It always came down to a battle royale in the streets of Berlin (the Creature's goal was to waste Hitler in the bunker, of course) with divisions of Nazi's biting it before the creature's fire breath as stukas rained down bullets and bombs and tanks pumped lead into the abomination. Lots of fun!

It's really, really hard to compete with you lucky Americans about fun finds :wink: (I'm living in the wrong country for games... :cry: ), but December, 19, I have an appointment with an Italian game distributor to look at the warehouse of 'old stuff' he got after another distributor bankruptcy. I have already snatched some interesting stuff now on sale (for example, three really nice SPI minigames) and I have high hopes :P. For example, I'd like very much to find a good copy of CoC Beyond the Mountains of Madness...
