It reminds me of Motorhead (1977):

DCC as the Motorhead of RPGs? Righteous. Then we should also regard any dents or dings with which the copies arrive as the equivalent of Lemmy's warts, valuable collectors items:

http://legacy.roadrunnerrecords.com/bla ... temID=5395
'MOTÖRHEAD leader Lemmy is considering having his famous facial warts surgically removed, according to Spin magazine. "They get bigger as you get older," Lemmy says, "and I've been shaving around them long enough." Incredibly, the bassist/vocalist would also be open to the possibility of auctioning off the gnarly things to a lucky (and presumably rich) fan. "Yeah, I could sell them on the Internet, like that porn-star chick Houston who sold pieces of her labia."'

I think I'll re-name my DCC character "Lemmy's Warts." Or maybe the warts would make good spell components for a campaign. A quest to find them all would be like collecting the Dragonballs.

From the thread in the goodman forums:

Goodman Games wrote:Some customers did receive damaged orders, which is a shame. We're working with them to get things taken care of. Just to put it in perspective...the number of "damage reports" is running at well under 1% of the pre-orders shipped. There are a lot of DCC RPG hardbacks moving through the postal service right now.

Many of you have ordered lots of products via mail order. Some of you have even shipped lots of products via mail order. Over the course of running Goodman Games, I have shipped hundreds of thousands of books. The packaging used to ship DCC RPG is sufficient for the vast majority of postal situations. You're hearing complaints not because there are "a lot of damages" but because there are "a lot of books shipped," and the small percentage of those that got damaged is a high enough number to generate some posts.

No matter what I do, the post office will damage some copies. I have experimented in the past with several mailing options (bubble wrap, foam peanuts, double-layered cardboard, etc.). Even in those situations, books sometimes get damaged. With the modern trend toward "collectible copies," the bar is raised continually higher, and collectors in particular tend to identify defects that are more and more subtle in nature. Many of the collectors are looking for that "perfect 10" copy, which is hard to guarantee under any circumstances. I'm sure you've all seen the guy at cons who looks through 30 copies to buy the most perfect one...some of you may even be that guy.

If there's anyone out there with a dinged-up book who hasn't already contacted me, feel free to do so and we'll sort it out. As noted on my web store, I can't guarantee "collectible perfection" but if the copy is materially damaged in some manner I'll replace it.

Sounds like a reasonable response to me... can't guarantee perfection but will correct damage.

My two copies arrived just fine... I think there was some drop-shipping involved, even the local PO couldn't figure out all the shipping stickers on the box, lol.

Btw full marks to Goodman for sending out the free posters a while back, that token sure got me on board the project.  Can't wait to get reading now...

Thinking further....

You know, I said the initial cost would hinder the game....but $39.99 is almost free compared to the prices for most other RPG launches at the moment.

Hmmm.

The book looks fantastic. Very nice mention of the Acaeum and the North Texas Con in Appendix O: OSR Resources. Just glancing through it I love the profuse illustrations, and in keeping with their other module covers DCC66.5 looks like it should adorn the notebook of a 9th grader who drew over a nice background illustration.

As previously noted the $9.99 price on the cover makes me wonder if this is actually a limited production module.

I received this from a third party who placed it in a small box inside a larger box and made sure that the small box was centered, sitting on packing, with packing around the corners, and packing on top. The outer box was damaged. The cocooned box was safe, and snug, and secure so that the book and module arrived undamaged.

I will sit down and really read through this rulebook, enjoying the multitude of pictures greatly. (As an aside D&Dnext creates no great interest or anticpation for me. Maybe I am alone in this, but Goodman has succeeded magnificently in attracting me as a consumer, while WotC has not).

Haven't seen much about the quality of paper and I saw this picture on goodman's forums:

DCC RPG (488 pages) vs. Pathfinder Core Rulebook (576 pages)

Image

about 100 pages less and quite a bit thicker than the PF rule book.

I don't know what the postman did to mine, but all four of the corners on mine are all banged up. I'd say a good 1/4"-1/2" depending on which corner it is. Would have been nice to get one like Al's.

from the website

Collector-quality copies: We are unfortunately not able to guarantee "collector-quality" copies. Even if the copy we package is pristine, we cannot guarantee that the mail carrier will deliver it pristine. If you are a collector looking for a "perfect" copy of a book, please be advised that we do not accept returns due to the normal wear-and-tear of the mail order process.

so perhaps no surprises then - though I must say I am a little teempted by these books, an their shipping (costs, at least) are not the worst in the world

I am pretty disappointed that they would sell a "collector" limited edition and not at least pack some padding inside the box. All of my corners are dinged and folded, and I have  acrease on the front cover.

Joe didn't say that Goodman would correct damage.  He said that he would correct books that were "materially damaged."

I don't plan to keep beating up Goodman over this, but they did sell a collector's edition and then kind of make light of us picky collectors for wanting the book in collectible condition.

sigh...
I thought the excuse/statement was not very well thought out.
Seemed to be a knee jerk reaction one might find on a forum board, written and then posted without printing it out and reading it for himself first.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Magic System and Spell casting Rules yet?
For the most part the rules seem to apply equally to both Mages and Priests much the same when casting spells.
I have (so far) only skimmed those rules, but it already seems too complicated.
From what I have skimmed (so far) spell castors have to make several die rolls when casting any spell... just to make sure the spell does not go bad.
Like turn the castor into an octopus limbed monstrosity... open up a worm hole into another plane of existence wherein undead, elementals, demons, devils or some other nasty critter comes forth to wreak havoc on the entire world just because you have miscast your magic missile spell.
As I stated, I have only skimmed it so far, so probably WAY TOO soon to say that is what goes on... but... YIKES!
I think I would only want to run a group of Dwarves or a bunch of human fighters... 8)

This fits my criteria as a reasonable response to varying critical demands... has anyone not been made 'right'?

I think the magic system is interesting.  I like spells not always working right.  I wonder about a spell system that takes up a full page of text to describe a spell.

I believe the magic system was created to make spell casting just a bit harder than "whiz bang, you're dead every time."

I haven't had a chance to crack the tome open yet, but I am curious to see how the system handles magic.  In each of the games I played at the conventions, the magic-user in the group was at least slightly sinister (and in one case, actually was the bad guy  8O  ).  In the game I played in March at GaryCon, the mage spent an entire combat unsuccessfully trying to cast a spell.  It seemed more than a little frustrating.

I can see how a 0 level spell caster would have plenty of trouble trying to cast any spell at all and in this game 0 is where all PCs start.
From what I have read so far, I think a character would have to be more than half a bubble of plumb to elect to choose a spell caster profession.
If a tapestry of the sketch on page 117 was hanging inside the front lobby of the local school of magic, I suspect that most applicants would not remain in the lobby for long.

As I have skimmed so far:
A 0 level mage (or Cleric for that matter, as both have to make die rolls for all spells) has (If I read it right) less than 50% chance for any spell to work at all.
And if he rolls a natural 1 with his die: d16, d20, d24, or d30 (depending on which he is allowed to use), BAD things WILL happen, some devastatingly bad, even for the most simple of spells.
Once again I refer you to the sketch on page 117...  8O
If he rolls a 2-10 then the spell simply does not work and the spell is lost; if he rolls an 11 (IIRC) the spell does not work, but he does not loose the spell, if he rolls 12 or higher it works...
With varying degrees of success depending on exactly how much higher than a 12 the result is (including bonuses if any).
FWIW: you can easily have a result (after a roll) of less than 1 (rules to explain this are in there somewhere)
At higher levels the spell caster gets more and more bonuses and can graduate to a higher die (from d16 to d20, etc.), but a natural roll of 1 is still always bad, while 2-10 is still a dud and 11 is still a dud but spell still in memory.

There are over 130 pages detailing bad rolls and good rolls offering table after table for the bad things and good things that can happen...
My eyes got groggy and unfocused with all the tables so I started looking at the awesome B&W sketches again.
There is no question that this book is going to take a long time for me to digest and totally understand (if I ever do).
I wish I could play in a few sessions with someone who already knows this system inside and out... :(

And as for the pages listing and detailing actual spells, while most spells are covered in just a page or so, many others have as many as 5 pages just for one spell and all the possibilities.

As I stated above, I am only skimming right now, so I may be getting all this wrong.

You aren't supposed to play the mage.  You are supposed to slay the mage.
