So was this against the "Thou shalt not make private offers" commandment?

Stomp! is fun, and generally sells for $20-30 at the high end.

I apparently hadn't included the :D when I posted about the offer unable to be refused, but had meant to.  I have no gripes, and was glad that a forum member got the lot vs. both of us losing out.

I notice that the seller (a reliable seller, by the way) has dropped her standard shipping price by $2 to only $6.

I neither make nor accept private offers for anything already listed for sale at auction, when it is already promised to the highest bidder.

I feel that to do otherwise is unethical.

Some folks apparently disagree. ::shrug::

First off I would like to have a copy but will not pay what it is going for. Prays for a reprint!  :twisted:

I hate auctions being ended like that. If you want to make an offer then make it a bid. If the seller wants to save eBay fees then he should have advertised it somewhere else. They knew to come here and post a message why not post it here as a private sale.  :?

Truth be told I am sure what both parties did is in violation of eBay policies. Any consequences from breaking those (if any) should be incurred.

At least in this situation it was not an auction that ran for six days and was ended mysteriously. And I would apply this to anyone who does this...so I know I am stepping on some toes, some big toes and some that I sure will fire me up. Just more hate from a fly over state I guess!  :lol:

Are private offers really against EBay policy?

I thought that EBay's warnings against off-Ebay sales were meant to protect the seller from fraud.

IF Ebay has a policy against such offers, then why is there no penalty for ending an auction early? Or is there?

oh hey frank - i actually totally agree with you. if an item has NO bids, then i may make an offer. if it already has bids on it, i would never make a private offer.

I've certainly contacted sellers via ebMail. Typically I state "This doesn't seem to be moving at this price... if you Relist it, I'll start it at $XX." That has often worked.

I have made offers on items with no bids...probably four or five times.  Every time I have made an offer, the seller could have gotten more money than they eventually got by either taking my offer or making a slightly higher counter-offer.

One way to prevent an auction ending early by private offers is to place a bid of at least 25% of the value of the items. Then email the seller and let him know what he has and the price it will probably sell for. A seller is less likely to entertain private offers when bids have been placed and the items selling price continues to elevate.

Happy collecting,
