Yes, there is an "expurgated" version of Carcosa.

Naturally, when I ordered from McKinney I specified unexpurgated...because I didn't want any sissy censored version.

My copy is probably special in some way, because unlike the other copies mine has a white cover.  McKinney did a special copy just for me...signed it, etc.

I read Carcosa and then let him know that the content was disturbing, but, I said, "I can take a joke."

He didn't respond.

Something tells me that the boxed set...and whatever else he is publishing with Jim Raggi and Lamentations of the Flame Princess...is probably expurgated to a considerable extent.

I don't think McKinney was going for gross or shocking.  I think he was going for horror.

The LotFP re-release of Carcosa will be a deluxe, expanded version of the unexpurgated Carcosa.

(Carcosa is a setting that can be used with any old-school game... it is not a full game in its own right)

It's a fine line, isn't it?  I subscribe to the "less is more" notion about horror, so I'd prefer an expurgated version, at least in this case.

Gross and shocking frequently don't work in video, either.  Neither Stephen King nor Lovecraft make for good film adaptations.  I see similar problems with RPGs.  It's better for gaming to soft-peddle the gore and let players' imagination work the horror elements.

(All of this JMHO, of course.)

There you have it...right from the source.

The expanded Carcosa would be improved by more details about the fantasy setting itself.

So, then, are there any other white-box-like sets for other game systems?

I know of OD&D, C&C, Traveller, and now S&S.

Anything else?
Boothill?
Gamma World?

Swords and Wizardry?  Did you mention that one already?

If you add non-white boxed sets there is several others (since Traveller is not white). The first that come to my mind are KABAL, Arduin Trilogy, Ironhedge, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I was using "white-box" to describe the type of rules set.  The color isn't an issue.

What about supplements, e.g., in the digest-size format of GH, BM, EW?
Were the TSR booklets the only ones published?
Or were there 3rd-party supplements?
Judges Guild comes to mind: They generated a lot of D&D material back in the day.
Wonder if they had any supplements for the original box set.

Just thinking out loud with electrons ...

Thanks, Mike!

I cycle in and out every few months.
I usually collect in the summer but our house was damaged by the tornados that ripped through Alabama on April 27th.  That threw everything out of whack.  :-/

That's at least a double, if not a triple-entendre.

The family and collection are fine.
A tree (a big one) fell on the house.
But insurance, builder,  bank, appraiser, etc, are all dragging their feet.
The usual.

But that is what led me to look through my collection and figure out what's what, which ultimately led to this thread.

Besides white box sets, I'm trying to figure out which direction I want to taking my collecting.

Decisions, decisions ...
