In the ad&d modules I'm familiar with, there aren't that many McGuffins. The only one I can think of is that shiny sword in I6.
Is the term restricted to describing item/items that take out the "boss", or does it include other items that help the heroes along their journey--keys, tokens (green cloaks in G1-3, D1-2), even some helpful advice from the locals?
How specificly anti-"boss" does the item have to be?
<curious>
[I get that Frodo's ring is clearly a McGuffin.]

Gildor speaks to Frodo: 'Others dwelt here before hobbits were; and others will dwell here again when hobbits are no more. The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot for ever fence it out.'--Tolkien

Yes, I understood that part. Sorry.

What I meant was why "Gubbin"?

Thanks

Kingmaker series --

Just read Parts 1 and 2 in the bookstore.

I like Part 1, with its open-ended adventure that lets PCs explore on the edge of the known world.

Part 2, though, begins the PCs on a quest to build a kingdom.
This is a little too involved for my taste.

Gotta love one of  Greenwood's new monsters: Caratoid
it's got the Innsmouth look 8)

EDIT -- Softened my post.  I wrote it from an iPhone, and it sounded snarky when I re-read it on a real monitor.

Keith, there are sidebars in each of the books (after part 1) which describes what happens if the players/DM don't want to use those rules. Of course, roles should probably still be applied so that the advisors can bring the PCs news of happenings within the kingdom when it's necessary.

B&N sent 15% off coupons.
So I bought the Pathfinder Core Rulebook for $35.

More interesting than that, though was the reaction when I bought it.
The guy behind the counter was the manager and he said Pathfinder material is selling really, really well.
I bought the last of three Core Rulebooks they had in stock.

Just one store in a medium-size city, but it's a good sign.

btw, I just saw a listing for this printable and on-line coupon for Borders (40% off instore or 33% off on-line). I don't think there's any cost to becoming a Borders member, just an email address...

http://dealnews.com/Borders-printable-c ... 88929.html

It expires on Sept 12.

One thing I have noticed about Pathfinder items in Half Price Books...

They aren't there.

The one time I spotted a couple Pathfinder modules on the shelf there were two guys waiting behind me to buy them.

The 4th Edition items are still there, month after month.  I don't think the Half Price guys have figured out that half of way too much is still way too much.

(I did notice that the U District Half Price Books, in Seattle, has figured out that White Wolf and most D20 hardbacks are not worth half price.  They've started to price them at 1/4 price.  They had a whole two shelves of White Wolf books marked down that way...still weren't selling.)

Manley Wade Wellman was listed by Gygax in Appendix N of the original 1E DMG, probably for these stories. I've been hearing about them for quite a while, and was waiting for this complete compilation to come out (earlier this year), but forgot to order until I got that same email from Paizo.

I ordered my copy from Amazon for $5 off the cover price:
http://www.amazon.com/Who-Fears-Devil-P ... 003&sr=8-1

Here's a summary of the Silver John stories by Badmike:
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewt ... 8&start=13

Wellman .. is probably best known for his "Silver John" series about a bard-type character in the Appalachian mountains that fights evil using his wits and a guitar with silver strings. Silver John might have even been one of EGG's models for the bard character in D&D, the majority of stories were published in the 50s and earlier, so EGG would have certainly read these in their initial appearances (The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction)

Got any recommendations?
I'm looking for a good AP.
I want something dungeon-heavy,
with good mysteries, riddles, etc
A rival party would be good, too.
Something Cthulhu-ish would be good as well,
but nothing too "disturbing".
I prefer my horror "lite"

thanks
Keith

Well, Pathfinder #2 has the best (IMO) haunted house adventure I've seen (although the end boss in the clock tower is OTT), #4 has stats for Hounds of Tindalos, #6 has stats for Denizens of Leng. However, #3 is probably too horror-heavy for you. The Rise of the Runelords AP (#1-6) was also 3.5.
I think that the Shackled City Hardback or Age of Worms adventures (from Dungeon #124-135) may be more what you're after, ie.very dungeon heavy, and both go from 1st -- 20th (maybe even 21st level?). Age of Worms has a ton of undead, as the BBEG is Kyuss. You could probably use the Pathfinder ruleset just fine with these (except you may need the 3.5 MM for some monsters, or just substitute them), considering that the encounters are tough; you'd probably need to work out the CMB and CMD scores though as each case arises.
Council of Thieves (#25-30) uses the Pathfinder ruleset and goes from 1st to 13th-level. Parts 2-5 have some solid "dungeons"; part 2 even has a play incorporated into it. There's not much horror in it, although there are lots of shadows and vampires in some parts.

Edit: Keith, I think (the early parts, at least) of the current AP, Serpent's Skull, involves different factions as they search for a lost city in the jungles of wherever. In the first half or so of 2011, the Carrion Crown AP will be set in Ustalav, a traditional "horror" kingdom, featuring adventures with ghosts, werewolves, vampires, and part 4 (?) specifically will specifically involve Lovecraftian elements.

I am wondering if Who Fears the Devil? really is a complete Silver John compilation.

The title has been published before...and what I read seems to indicate that it is a compilation...but not a complete compilation.

Otherwise, I would have bought it already.

For instance, does it include, The Old Gods Awaken?

(And, while searching Wellman's work I hit upon this related link with a rather unfortunate book title:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... s&n=507846
     )

Has anyone else noticed the picture on page 217 of the Pathfinder core rulebook?

It looks to me like the artist has given the wizard on that page Frank Mentzer's face.  8)

Since the Pathfinder Core Rulebook can be rather intimidating I've found that it's easier to start with the combat section and then work backward.

This is especially true if you remember most of the old AD&D rules.

You'll have to get accustomed to feats and skills, but otherwise it's a good approach.

My browser didn't load the webpage very well, so I did not realize until I scrolled to the bottom that the Beginner Box is not available yet.

Per Paizo's website: Preorder - Expected approximately October 2011.
