The AP series books also have a lot of character development.
They are micro-campaigns, but there is a heavy emphasis on antagonists and their stats.
Luke, Han & Leia going after Jabba the Hut would be an Adventure Path.

The modules seem to be more like traditional TSR modules, as serleran described.

Looks like Paizo's tapping into the strong villain as a game-seller.
Good. Bring on a new generation of Strahds, Lolths, Sakathas, etc. <curious>

A good recent thread discussing the merits of the various adventure paths is as follows: http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizoPublishing/pathfinder/adventurePath/generalDiscussion/adventurePathsTheGoodBadAndWhatWereTheyThinking

It seems like KM is the king's choice, and CotCT and RotR are decent, too.
I didn't read further than the first few responses, though, since some spoilers were creeping in.
The positive feedback about KM seems universal.

I'm growing tired with one particular pattern in the APs. The fifth adventure is always a huge dungeon complex (with the semi-exception of Kingmaker; Irovetti's palace is a big dungeon by Kingmaker's standards, but pretty reasonably sized elsewhere) that contains some McGuffin needed to kill the final boss, weaken him, destroy his allegiances, etc.

This is one of the Pathfinder posts.
What this person finds annoying is exactly the kind of thing I enjoy.
It doesn't matter to me if the players are after a McGuffin.
That's fine by me.
What I like to do, and presumably what my players
enjoy is the challenge of cool obstacles and creepy monsters.
They find the backstories interesting (this guild versus that one, etc)
but we never really want to create a sword & sorcery novel.
We just wanted a real challenge when we play.

We call it the "Gubbins."  Whatever device, book, spell, thingy...that un-does the badguy and solves the problem.

In the ad&d modules I'm familiar with, there aren't that many McGuffins. The only one I can think of is that shiny sword in I6.
Is the term restricted to describing item/items that take out the "boss", or does it include other items that help the heroes along their journey--keys, tokens (green cloaks in G1-3, D1-2), even some helpful advice from the locals?
How specificly anti-"boss" does the item have to be?
<curious>
[I get that Frodo's ring is clearly a McGuffin.]

Gildor speaks to Frodo: 'Others dwelt here before hobbits were; and others will dwell here again when hobbits are no more. The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot for ever fence it out.'--Tolkien

Yes, I understood that part. Sorry.

What I meant was why "Gubbin"?

Thanks

Kingmaker series --

Just read Parts 1 and 2 in the bookstore.

I like Part 1, with its open-ended adventure that lets PCs explore on the edge of the known world.

Part 2, though, begins the PCs on a quest to build a kingdom.
This is a little too involved for my taste.

Gotta love one of  Greenwood's new monsters: Caratoid
it's got the Innsmouth look 8)

EDIT -- Softened my post.  I wrote it from an iPhone, and it sounded snarky when I re-read it on a real monitor.

For those of you with iPhones or iPads:
This app provides a solid reference for all things Pathfinder.

Keith, there are sidebars in each of the books (after part 1) which describes what happens if the players/DM don't want to use those rules. Of course, roles should probably still be applied so that the advisors can bring the PCs news of happenings within the kingdom when it's necessary.

B&N sent 15% off coupons.
So I bought the Pathfinder Core Rulebook for $35.

More interesting than that, though was the reaction when I bought it.
The guy behind the counter was the manager and he said Pathfinder material is selling really, really well.
I bought the last of three Core Rulebooks they had in stock.

Just one store in a medium-size city, but it's a good sign.

btw, I just saw a listing for this printable and on-line coupon for Borders (40% off instore or 33% off on-line). I don't think there's any cost to becoming a Borders member, just an email address...

http://dealnews.com/Borders-printable-c ... 88929.html

It expires on Sept 12.

One thing I have noticed about Pathfinder items in Half Price Books...

They aren't there.

The one time I spotted a couple Pathfinder modules on the shelf there were two guys waiting behind me to buy them.

The 4th Edition items are still there, month after month.  I don't think the Half Price guys have figured out that half of way too much is still way too much.

(I did notice that the U District Half Price Books, in Seattle, has figured out that White Wolf and most D20 hardbacks are not worth half price.  They've started to price them at 1/4 price.  They had a whole two shelves of White Wolf books marked down that way...still weren't selling.)

Manley Wade Wellman was listed by Gygax in Appendix N of the original 1E DMG, probably for these stories. I've been hearing about them for quite a while, and was waiting for this complete compilation to come out (earlier this year), but forgot to order until I got that same email from Paizo.

I ordered my copy from Amazon for $5 off the cover price:
http://www.amazon.com/Who-Fears-Devil-P ... 003&sr=8-1

Here's a summary of the Silver John stories by Badmike:
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewt ... 8&start=13

Wellman .. is probably best known for his "Silver John" series about a bard-type character in the Appalachian mountains that fights evil using his wits and a guitar with silver strings. Silver John might have even been one of EGG's models for the bard character in D&D, the majority of stories were published in the 50s and earlier, so EGG would have certainly read these in their initial appearances (The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction)

Got any recommendations?
I'm looking for a good AP.
I want something dungeon-heavy,
with good mysteries, riddles, etc
A rival party would be good, too.
Something Cthulhu-ish would be good as well,
but nothing too "disturbing".
I prefer my horror "lite"

thanks
Keith
