Tadashi and I ate dinner at Alcatraz tonight, and it was good/decent.  Neither of us are likely to be able to get away from the booth until after the dealer's hall closes at 6pm....

If anybody could snag some of the promo Legacy of the Green Regent cards they are handing out for free and sent them to me, I'd be eternally grateful... (or, if you can find somebody selling their later series ones for cheap).

8O

What was that about R7-R10?? That means, the value of each tournament module of the AD&D R-series must be set in the range of $700 to $1,000?

Wow.

Did they give any additional information at the auction, like how many copies exist?

Do they publish the results of the more interesting auctions later on the web?

Shit, those are easily worth that. The only surprising price to me is the woodgrain and the R2.
You can't tell me that the R's (besides 1-4 of course) aren't worth as much if not more than Tamoachan or Inverness, etc. They're infinitely rarer. Ask yourself this: Have you ever seen one, or even seen one for sale? $1,000 apiece is easily what they should fetch, and I think someone got a great deal at $3,000/$600/$700. I have always thought the Acaeum values were abysmally low, considering rarity. The sole reason I wouldn't touch them is the same as the prepub R's, way too easy to counterfeit.

Wow.  Thanks for the report from the Floor Burnie(Bros)!

I used to think this was an affordable 'everyman's' hobby... not like collecting rare books or art or other such things.

Unless I get my company to go IPO Google style... I'm tooo damn poor for this hobby!

Well.. gives me motivation to get out today and hit the yard sales. :)

Were the R5 and R6 the same version that was published in Polyhedron?

Thanks for the report, Burntwire.

Are the folks dropping $4,000 anyone we know from eBay?
Is it correct to say that the prices have spiked significantly and there's more interest in the D&D auctions than from years past?
And haven't these folks who are bidding so much on R2 ever heard of eBay?

Prices on the R5+ mods haven't spiked, since there were never any prices to go by to begin with.
R2 shrinked in VF, well, I'd be happy to shrink a VF R2 and sell it to you for a flat $150.

Alas, I haven't had a chance to attend the auction at all, and I missed Frank Mentzer when he dropped by our booth :-/

On the plus side, however, both of the brothers burnt came by as did mordred.

There are several OOP dealers in the hall, but I haven't really had a chance to scour them for stuff either :(

On the negative side, Crazy Egor's is here, which is good, but they were selling copies of Rob Kuntz's "(To the) City of Brass" for $2.75 each IIRC---they were directly printed from the Acaeum page :( :( :(  Rob went over and told them to cut it out, which they did....

We are not sure if anyone from the forums was even there. The people who were dropping the bucks were GenCon auction vets, most were there last year. The auction was much more crowded this year, and prices seemed higher. Maybe some of them haven't thought of using Ebay. One of the auctioneers(Josh) has been an online reseller for 5 years or so. Not sure about his selling name.

BTW: On the Tourneys, Frank Mentzer said that either "Great Bugbear Hunt" or "Bigby's Tomb" was printed off on TSR's printer in 1986(the tourney was ran several years prior). To me that means it isn't original, and someone still paid $600.

Here are a few more items/prices from the auction:

-Deities and Demigods original Cthulhu manuscript and letters to/from Eric Holmes(Photocopies, nothing original, but had more info than the published version)-$? I think around $180
-Palace of the Vampire Queen(1st print/no cover version) NM-$275
-"Hybrid/Frankenstein" 3rd print Woodgrain(Box FR, Books VF)-$975
-"GYPSY" another Frank Mentzer RPGA tourney-$700
-6th(or higher)print White Box Set in shrink(box slightly beat up)-$180
-Dragon Mag. 1-220, SR 1-7, and Strategic Preview #3(all VG or better)-$1000
-The highest priced lot at the auction was three packs of Magic the Gathering cards(only 360 packs of this variety made it out)-$3400 8O

The prices above are from memory and might be off some(forgot a pen Saturday night). The GenCon site will probably have this info available soon.

Items we won:
-Tom Wham IOU's(5 different original pieces, framed with story attatched to back)-Tom used these when he was working at the Dungeon Hobby Shop in 1977-$105  :D
-TSR Periodicals(Dragon, Little Wars,Lizard Man Logo) Stationary 1978-$10 :)
-Dungeon Mag. #1(NM)-$20

Unfortunately we never made it to the RPGA room to see about getting some goodies. We met Grodog, Tadashie Ehara, David"Zeb" Cook, and of course Frank Mentzer. All great guys. We also saw Dave Arneson when we were at David Cooks booth but didn't want to bother him(he was in a conversation).

Actually, I said the Polyhedron version was the same as the original. If that means it isn't original, then you yourself paid thousands of dollars for junk (the R prepubs).

GenCon memories

Just a quick article on GenCon from 1968-present, for those who are interested.  Sounds like 1977 was the year to be there.
