This is due to them typically being used to store books, and as ExTSR mentioned, not holding up very well over time.There also haven't been a lot that have come up for sale recently that weren't part of a collection of a renowned person, such as Larry Elmore or James Ward. Four of the most recent ones that were sold on eBay were from their collections. That has probably skewed the valuations, since they sold for between $240-$840.
