In a Moldvay basic set, I found a separate Tome of Monsters (or such) - a small notebook where the previous owner painstakingly transcribed all monster statistics and details from the regular manual. No additions, no changes, just the same text, all in tidy handwriting. I couldn't imagine myself having done anything like that.

evl: you aren't missing anything worthwhile.

I found a set of TSR 1980 Module Submission guidelines in an Moldvay Basic Set that I bought at Goodwill around 1985. For more, see this thread:

Poll: Do you have TSR Module Submission Guidelines?

Never found anything in my box sets.. one of my copies of harbinger house however had some rather wierd new rules scrawled in in pen... I sold it on eventually, prefering to keep my pristine version and heck, considering I got it for £1 it sold for about 8.. not bad really.

I do however stock wierd things in my own boxsets... the planescape campaign box has a lot of old character sheets from a couple of rather bizzare games I was running, plus random scribbles of inititive and hp from various battles... I think our random npc the monk kidnapped is in there too.. I liked that npc, the party treated him like crap and kept threatning to kill him if the kid didn't do what he was told... bah.. that's what you get for having an evil character in the party isn't it?
If I ever sell them I might leave that stuff in for amusement... heh.. others might get a kick out of reading the adventure notes. they'll even get the random doodles that were drawn as I waited for the players to quit bickering and actually get on with the plot... haha.

I can finally post to this thread :D . As a semi-avid purchaser of box sets I was always a little disappointed when the set was "merely" complete. Not that I wanted an R Series module to be tucked away in my Forgotten Realms box, but I wanted some mystery.

Although this pales in comparison to some of your finds... A recent purchase of some Greyhawk Boxes resulted in:

A handwritten letter from an apartment manager "politely" warning the gamer to make his friends park in visitor parking lest they wanted to be towed.

A spreadsheet outlining what appears to be an office pool of some sort.

A college (?) paper on linguistics.

A nice hand-drawn map of Ket on graph paper (in color...nice job too!).

Some gaming notes from a Ravenloft game.

Two complete (though very rough shape) Greyhawk Campaign Setting folders with booklets and maps.

Two extra Greyhawk maps (at least I think they are extra...I sorted through what should be in the boxes and folios, then had two left-over complete maps!).

Maybe not a treasure trove, but I am happy :P

I'd love to see a scan of the Ket map, nevcoup, if you're willing to share :D

I found a secret of the sages newsletter in the gray Forgotten Realms boxed set. That box was the first and last thing I bought from Titan Games...Needless to say I was very pleased to find it.

Hmm, no, I don't have a gambling problem, I'm winning, and winning is not a problem. That's like saying Michael Jordan has a basketball problem, or Def Leppard has an awesomeness problem. So why don't y'all pour some sugar on that?

No problem. I'll take a photo tomorrow and post it. It might take a little for a scan as my scanner hasn't been hooked up for years. :D

Nice bump.

Wierd thing is about a map of Ket.  Not only do we all know where that is, but we're also all wondering what's on the map that we need to know.  8O

There's a used bookstore I frequent that had quite a few 2nd ed boxed sets for sale.
I've found extra Ravenloft modules in Ravenloft Boxed Sets, and Monstrous Compendium supplements in Dark Sun Sets, but the best was when I found an H2 AND H3 in a old FR Boxed set. This was after I had an argument with the store owner about "price gouging"-If there was an item in the store that had no bookstore price tag, they would try to charge ALIBRIS prices for the item in question.

If you believe that ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS is a game worth playing, you will certainly find it doubly so if you play well.
