It is not a conspiracy, well not anymore anyway. Since you are in the UK, I can only assume you did not experience the "cash" discount days at gas stations here in the U.S.  It was fact, someone else will back me up here...right guys...anyone...anyone...

actually about fifteen years ago I was an exchange student in Kansas (I am getting old) which apart from being a bit of a culture shock, gave me the opportunity to drive around a bit in the US.  I do seem to remember getting a discount for cash - oh and also credit cards were all processed with that slidey thing rather than electronically so you could go WAY over your limit...[/i]

The reason they did that is to cover the surcharges from the credit card processing companies.  When I had my business, I was being charged 1% for Visa & MC, 2.5% for American Express and 4% for Discover.  Now adays, I'm sure they just pass that on to everyone.
