Hello all,

My name is Michael and I will be 46 this year. I have been playing or DM'ing since 1980. We started with the basic and expert then went to advanced. We have a current game that has been running on and off since 1985, we play every other Friday. We use advanced DND rules with some second edition stuff thrown in the mix.

We are in upstate New York. Unfortunately the game / hobby shops in the area do not carry any of the older material.

I have over 200 pieces or so. So I decided to add to my collection, and started to look about. I found this site and was a lurker for a few weeks. I like the information you have gathered and hopefully with your advice I will be able to add to my collection.

 Thank you for your time,
         Michael

Welcome. This is the best place to come to as a collector. Check out bookstores, charity shops, goodwills, comic books stores, etc... as well as flea markets, bazaars and garage sales around your area, you might luck out.

Otherwise this is the age of the internet. Bargains come up one Ebay. Look in at our classifieds, RPGMarketplace and Dragonsfoot and you can nab some treasures from time to time.

Take a look at the thread about collecting goals and you'll see a dozen different types of collectors and collections (at least).

Patience in collecting is your friend. If you are just starting out you may want to keep your eye on large lots to fill in a lot of gaps, but start setting up ideas for searches to find what you specificly want. Have fun and good hunting.

Welcome and it sounds like a pretty tidy sized collection already! :)
Good luck in your hunting, and as JasonZ says, patience is a virtue (as I am still learning  )

After posting a few threads I thought I would take the time to introduce myself. I am Jon, used to play D&D many years ago with my younger brother and friends down the street, and now collect various TSR and WotC related material as I now just enjoy reading the books in my spare time.

My (insured) collection includes on the order of 1000 pieces including most all books, modules, booklets, boxed sets, etc. from Basic D&D, 1st ed. AD&D, and 2nd. AD&D. I have incomplete collections of Gamma World and 3rd/3.5 ed. D&D as well. I lack any of the truly collectable items (original D&D, RPGA series, R series, brown B3, etc. (mostly b/c I have never had several hundred dollars at hand to spend at once on RPG materials).

Right now I am in the process of collecting some Shrink Wrapped Basic, 1st, and 2nd ed. materials to replace the aging collectables I currently possess and am buying up 3rd/3.5 ed D&D before the prices truly skyrocket. I still don't understand why the 3.5 edition books are so expensive.

Thanks, Jon!

Jon: First... Welcome to the Forums...
My thoughts as to why 3.5 Edition books are expensive is that many young collectors started with it and many older collectors started late to that scene and/or are just now looking to investigate that edition (I am one of those older guys).

The younger players probably sold most (or all) of the 3.5 Edition collection they had to purchase 4th Edtion when it first came out, and then decided 4th was not an improvement over 3.5 Edition and they are now looking to get back to 3.5 Edition.

Michael: Welcome to the Forums...

Welcome Jon!  I'm pretty new myself.  I only have about 50 items so far - but I've collected them all in the past 5 weeks!

To date, I'm just beefing up my inventory of items so I can read and use them.  I try to collect good quality, but I don't need SW or mint items.

I still haven't spent > $30 on a single item!  But I've gotten a few good deals here and there..

Welcome!

Hiya folks,

My name's Keith, and I am a returning collector.

For whatever it's worth, I'm not actually new to The Acaeum  per se, but I have been away for 3 years, and I have not been actively collecting during that time period.

So, even though I talked to (or annoyed) the long-standing members back in 2005, it  feels like I'm new to the site since it's grown so dramatically since I left.

My passion is for Original D&D, specifically the rules sets and supplements.  I began playing in 1978 after a guy in high school, during a beer run, realized I was a fan of Isaac Asimov and therefore surmised that I would love D&D.  I've never been quite sure how/why he made this leap, but I sure am glad he did.

I attended a snobby undergraduate college where I joined an Animal House frat, partied like mad, majored in physics, and met one of the hottest girls on campus, who I'm now married to.  Being 45-years-old, I do the "dad thing" a lot with my two kids, and I love it.  They're at the age where D&D just might capture their hearts if I can pull them away from the PS3 or the swimming pool long enough for me to explain the game.

D&D is one of many interests that I have, along with history, humor, genealogy, gadgets, political science, theology, creative writing, sketching, books and college football (Roll Tide).  I wish I could say I'm active, but I'm really not.  I love to hike, play soccer and shoot hoops, but I don't do any of those with any regularity.

My favorite movies are Casablanca and Ferris Bueller.  My favorite drink is root beer.   My favorite food is Tex-Mex. My favorite music is classic rock and Jimmy Buffett.  My favorite authors are Pat Conroy and Doris Kearns Goodwin.  My favorite TV mini-series is Taken, and my favorite TV show is House.  College football is my favorite sport by far, although I also love college basketball, soccer and the NFL.  I'm descended from a long line of Southern mountain folk (ever see Deliverance?) and like most Southerners, I have a love/hate relationship with my culture. I'm spiritual, but not religious.  But above all else I believe as Kurt Vonnegut did, that we were put on this Earth to fart around.

I'll close this TMI post with this: You can skydive without a parachute.  You just can't do it twice.

Peace.

Roll Tide!

And, if you come through Mobile to the Free Buffet concert shoot me a PM and stop by.  Especially on a Tuesday night.  I am confident you would fit in and enjoy our game night!  You might enjoy rummaging around in the collection, too.

Twould be fun.  Unfortunately, oil & water don't mix so our yearly trip to Gulf Shores has been cancelled.  May take you up on the offer down the road, though.

I'm from Huntsville, and aside from years of college in Birmingham & Tuscaloosa, I've lived here my whole life.  Birmingham is like a second hometown, though.  My wife is from Homewood.

From B'ham too!  Lived all over though.  Seems to be a lot of gamers in AL, actually.  You guys could come down for Mobicon or CoastCon.  Both are fun.
