It's gotta be the bidding frenzy with all that great stuff from one reputable seller. I tried by putting in a few bids on multiple items, competitive bids I thought, and I lost handily on all of them. I thought my bid on the woodgrain at a little over $1,000 would snag it considering the condition, but nope, I was easily overbid.
Congrats to Paul for all the extra cash you just made!

I have been working on upgrading the condition of a few rare items leaving me with rare doubles and thought I'd strike while iron was hot. Boy is it hot!

And there is more to come! I'll be listing again next Sunday.

Only 3 or 4 of the items were not doubles, just things that didn't fit with my collecting desires, e.g., the 2nd Ed. PH proof copy and the Constructing Scientifiction and Fantasy booklet. I bought them on a whim and then decided I had no desire to collect them. I'm more of a specialist than a generalist. I try to buy things that I can use too - I still play AD&D. When my group assaulted the steading of the hill giant chieftan, I ran it using the first print. Although, I must say, I did not eat pizza that night!

Another reason my lots went so well is the company they kept. Lots of rares in one auction really boosted the visibility of the others. I mean those Dragon Dice polyhedrals went for $31.55! I was stunned.

I am grateful, however, that everything went so well. My family needs the extra money right now.

That's good to hear all that money will be spent for something useful (NOT to buy more RPGs hahaha).

How much are these dice worth??? I wanted them, too.

As far as stupidity, well I'm just glad the enthusiasm is back! PDF's, WMD's, and GNP's seemed to have put the fire out. I mean there was a couple of Fighting Wheels that went for $30 or did not sell at all in the last few months. Other rare items were going for half of what the should have. The marketplace was severely depressed.

Hopefully the hobby surges in popularity as the frenzy continues. The best result might be the resurfacing of rares for auction.

I think photocopies or scans are acceptable for running games if you have the original in your office.

I've just had too many 'ooopses' in my day to justify bringing out a collectible piece around a group with 12 elbows, low hand-eye coordination and litres of surgary drink and greasy pizza.

G1 is probably one of my favorite all time games after T1... Awesome fight that had us fighting a staggered retreat from the back of the steading to the front where we held the line and took a few bad boys down and then proceeded to sneak off, heal and come back with a fully charged vengeance! It was epic...

I too have been guilty of using my one-and-only copies for play. Though it was years ago, before I seriously thought of them as collectable. Still I did not write in them or seperate pages. Crap, i must have run my first printing of A1 four or five times. The worst offense was running C2 mono. Of course that was 20+ years ago, but there it is.

The giant series was sweet back in the day. We had rotating DMs so I got to play...it was bloody...lost half the party and then some. Of course that DM always, and I mean always, beat the shit out of us. Not too mention he had a habit of ignoring the suggested levels section. Guy killed 54 first level characters in Under the Storm Giants Castle (piece of crap that it is). I mean he wiped out numerous complete parties. He was king of the, "OK, you get ambushed by 10 Wights." We look around dumbfounded, being second level and all. "Hmm, not one magic weapon in the party. We lay down and die."

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

Nah, running was generally never an option. We would usually be surprised (no matter what precautions were taken). Not to mention, the ambushes usually included falling down some pit trap with no immediate chance of escape.

After the slaughter, the conversation went in the direction of, (DM) "Hmm, I didn't think that encounter was that tough." ...blank faces.

or, "Why didn't you guys do "X"?" "X" was usually some impossible leap of logic, and I use that term loosely. "X", additionally, always relied on some bit of information that our kind DM omitted ("I thought that would make the solution too easy...") Or even better, the only player who had a clue wasn't playing that session.

Then the always common sense solution of (DM) "Why didn't you try to talk to them." (Us) "eh...uh...because the last time we tried to talk to anything you slaughtered half the party and berated us for being so stupid as to talk to a monster..."

Ah, yes, the golden age of D&D...

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

It's no secret that most of Paul's auctions went higher than logic would dictate, but for my part I don't feel the least bit bad about overpaying. Do I really think the Hex Pad is worth $150? Hell no! But I was certainly willing to pay it because...

1) Paul is a reputable seller. And a nice guy.

2) You don't see some of these items too often, if at all. Especially in this kind of condition.

3) I haven't bought much lately and dammit, I wanted something cool!

The character sheets were the ones that surprised me the most. I really thought I'd be pretty safe at around $250 but, alas, I made the mistake of underestimating burnie's tenacity. :lol:

We were willing to pay over $300 for the Character Sheets. Character sheets this old are really hard to come by in complete condition. Most people who bought caracter sheets did so to use them, if just one is missing then the item is in less than good condtion(being incomplete). Anyone else have any of these Character Sheets complete(just wondering cosidering who bid on these)?

The Hex Pad was to high for me to bid on.

The one that suprised us the most was the 2nd Ed Player's Handbook. I bought an Player's Option: Combat & Tactics inter-office copy for only $13 off of eBay. I was probably willing to pay around $60 for the Player's Handbook.

Would have loved to get that player's handbook, but a bit to much for me

Two packs of these character sheets were sold in a lot of books about a month+ ago. If I recall, one was complete, the other had one sheet missing. The whole lot went for about $100.00 if I recollect. You had to look really close to notice them. I thought someone that frequents these forums won them... I missed the auction -- aaargh!

I personally don't think character sheets are worth that kind of money (no offense burnt:). Yes, they are rare, as far as we know currently, but, what are you going to do with them other than adding them to the hoard? Especially since they are so butt-ugly;)

While I don't have complete pads, I've got a pad of the yellow sheets as well as the earlier green ones. What makes these particular pads so rare is that they weren't sold -- internal TSR use only.

Yup - got caught in the bidding frenzy too - I managed to bag the dice!

The reason for some (but not all!) the weird prices is that sometimes the items never got shipped to the UK. In cases like this there is a bit more competition. Well, that's my story - so I'm sticking to it!!

Looks like beans on toast for the next 2 weeks!!!
