I think Chainmail was about right price-wise

Yup; congrats, Mike. Hopefully the cover will tidy up a bit.
(Still need to replace the photocopied one I've got from that seller in Japan (the one with the overpriced RPGA3, etc.)).

Deadlord36 wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5933401085

That is insanely cheap. I can't believe you guys let that slip by!

Didn't miss it, Frank. The seller genuinely had a second copy to go with a good, decent-priced "Lizard" Chainmail from the same batch of auctions.

OK, I'd like to post a quick "thank you" to everyone who left me as underbidder on about half of <bentleychester>'s auctions, leaving me with one win from 21 bids; and that not a bargain, either!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5932180138

Oh well, that's what I get for bidding relatively low...

What did amuse me was that <bentleychester> then bid on the dozen copies of "The Beholder" up for grabs, and wasn't far off the mark (£2.50/zine is fair enough, IMHO).
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5932190934

(Mebbe the other fanzines he had for sale were duplicates?? *shrugs*)

You could buy a goddam LIVE tiger for that!

*lol*. I'm being watched... :P
I've still notionally got three pumas in WA State, so I dun need a tiger to go with 'em. (The big stripy cats have a negative value, anyhow; even the white 'uns).

OK, I've been looking for a copy of that print for a long, long time.
Dealer price is usually around $5,000 (e.g. https://homepages.force9.net/chasefinea ... epherd.htm ), so I just bit my lip and threw in a snipe.
(And lo' and behold another copy appeared immediately afterwards, based on the price of my win... and was snapped up pdq http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 3761976192 . If I'd been a dealer...)

===

Anyhow; that's all kinda off-topic, no? ;)

Of greater relevance: Ozzie D2 ($42), very nice 5th print OD&D set (would be high side of EX, but for some age toning on the box; all the books are NM) with earlyish Greyhawk and Blackmoor thrown in ($83), "Book of Treasure" ($37), Arneson's 1977 "Dungeon Master's Index" (never heard of this and paid high 'coz Paul saw it, too), a few unexpected wins off Burnie Bros ("Classic Warfare" at last. *yay!*), nice Greyhawk for a present ($11; bargains getting rare on the supplements these days) and a first print unpunched WBRM in original packaging ($88 )
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5933380670
(have already had an offer of $120 from a high-flying buyer who thought they'd sneak it on a low snipe bid! sorry, not a hope...)

Was also surprised that no-one put up a fight for those early JG journals ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5929602599 ), either; after they were "advertised" on the board.

Hope you've all been having a good time hunting (or selling), too :)

Ahh .. so you are still alive... I thought you might have been eaten by a tiger ... we missed you :-) Plus you still owe me a few responses to some of the emails I have sent you.

Also if there are particular items you are after you should let me know!

Thanks, Mike... Heh, that I do. (But you never did explain that business 'bout ST1, either?).

Oh; and goes without saying, but you've made quite a few good purchases, too. ;)

Hi Harami -

I had a run at Bentley's auctions as well... I bid on about 15 of them, and won just one... for the Archworld miniature rules. It's a bit disheartening to place all your bids as you leave work one day, to come in the next and have your inbox filled with "You have been outbid" and "Auction not won" emails.

That WBRM you won... can you supply any more details about it? I won a WBRM a couple of months ago which I think is a 2nd or 3rd printing (ziplock bag, smaller sized non-mimeograph rules). Can you post more details about your copy (either here or in a PM) when your copy arrives?

And lastly, did you get the PM about the early SpaceGamer duplicates I have? Let me know if you are keen to work out a trade, otherwise I'll throw them up on ebay.

Regards

Mike

With all the rarities you've been accumulating recently, I might just hold you to that...

Howdy Harami,

You'd have paid a lot more if I didn't already have one :) I just wanted to make sure that it didn't go for nuthin'. I hate to see rare items go without a fight!

FYI it is a complete index of original D&D, plus the 4 supplements, 7 issues of The Strategic Review, and a few early Dragons (I think). Comes in handy when you are looking for the origins of a rule, class, or magic item.

I have a Dungeon Masters Index. I had no idea it was rare or worth anything maybe $50. I've had it for years, got it from a local in a lot sometime back. It's listed on the After-glow not to fondly so I disregarded it as having any big $numbers$ attached to it.

One self-published item called "The Dungeon Master's Index". This is a rather useless index of all the monsters, spells, etc. found in chainmail, the original D&D and its supplements, and the seven issues of The Strategic Review. Dave Arneson was assisted by Dave Meggary (editor) and Heritage Miniatures (graphics).

It's interesting to note there's no printing information in the book. Was this sold at Con's or maybe mail-order? It would only be useful to a DM with most of if not all the supplements. I find it very useful especially since the rules where growing with each supplement so an index is valuable for play. What's it worth anyway?

Yep, it's him.  I emailed him, and he's playing Living Greyhawk locally.  More details to follow as our discussion continues :D

*g*. We're all pretty much in the same boat, here.
Was a "given" that it's not overly common...

Would've been $16 without Paul bidding. Was $48, with....
Not too much of an "ouch" at the current exchange rate, even with international shipping.

Thanks for the overview y'both. Looking forward to receiving it (eventually...).

So; who printed it then? *runs over to OCLC, just in case*

Hrr... nothing.
Not a single copy in a public library (and even extended the search worldwide).

Had kinda hoped that it was at least a "semi-official" publication, for obvious reasons.

This arrived today (via customs  :x and an extra £27.53 VAT - 1st time I've been caught   )

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 5927928868

The box looks a lot worse in real life than it does in the photo.  I think every edge of the lid is split with 3 layers of masking tape on the outside and tape on the inside keeping it together.  The base isn't much better.  But the contents are in great condition.

:(

If the package was labelled "books" there should be no duty payable into the UK (unless they've changed the classifications and tariffs behind my back and that still hasn't rippled through, fully).
"Collectability" doesn't impact this at all, unless you're seriously "high end".

Have had several parcels at $500-700+ and not an eyebrow blinked...

Hrr... but you needed the box primarily, John. No?
Darned low-res piccies... :(

Still, at the price (about the same as Burnie's OCE, no?); congrats again, anyhow!
