I will post a picture if I can....got to locate the right camera and then make my son do it for me.

However...the "washed out" look you are mentioning may in fact be the color difference I have long noticed.  I suspect it was always lighter colored.

Weren't these going for $40 - $50 just a year or so ago?  I think I picked up mine for $12 and really haven't looked at them much since.

A simple purchase, but a fun find for me back in June which I meant to post earlier.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1

Received & in very nice condition. I haven't owned an entire Holmes Box Set since my very first D&D set back in the early 80s. That original set had a 3rd edition rulebook & B2 & chits (box & chits are long-gone & the books are very worn and missing pages), whereas this one has a 2nd edition rulebook & mono B1 & low-impact dice (none of which I ever owned until now). :)

Whoa!  Very nice! And for a great price!

I'm starting to look into the Holmes boxes...I want to replace the box I have framed on my wall...a casualty of the Psychic Wars.

Does the Lizard Logo book make it more valuable?

Thanks. Shipping was a littler higher than I realized (~$8), but he packaged it very nicely with foam peanuts in a large box & sent it by UPS.

I wish I still had my original box & chits. I don't even remember throwing them out...I've almost thrown out my original rulebook because it's so ragged (missing pages, cover stapled on). But the inside of the cover has the first map I ever drew. It's a crude island with a giant crab (wonder where that came from...). Yes, I drew a large crab right on the map.

A few years ago I cut the Trampier manticore out & made a magnet out of it. Kind of fun having on the fridge (remember, the entry says "Their favorite prey is man").

Yes...to some folks, most of them around here.
If the rulebook also has code F-116R on the cover it's a first print (~1977) of the rulebook & uses "hobbits" instead of "halflings".
However, the 2nd & 3rd prints of the rulebook also have the Lizard Logo, but have code 2001 on the cover & use "halfings" instead of "hobbits".
Basic Set

I compiled an annotated list of the cumulative changes between the first print and the last printing (3rd edition, Wizard Logo, Dec 79) of the rulebook:
Dragonsfoot • View topic - List of changes made to the Holmes Basic Rulebook (1st/3rd)

Basically, the 1st print has the most errors (which oddly makes it more collectable)...if you want the most "playable" version, go a later print. The early prints also have some differences in artwork/formatting (see above list).

I'm still hunting for a 1st printing set, but I'm not settling for the stand-alone rulebook.  I think $60 might be on the low side, if it was well-known.  :?

You'd think . . . but where was everyone when this was auctioned?  I even listed it in the classifieds:

cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem& ... T&rd=1

I was there

I still need to compare the 1st with the 2nd print using zhowar's format, just haven't found the time.
