Thanks for the introduction to this guy, red_bus.  I went looking for him based on your tagline quote.   :D

You are very welcome.  i am glad you like him - he's really great!  Real earthy stuff  :)

'North' is probably my favourite collection - although I have been meaning to get his prose translation of Beowulf which is very highly rated.  Not so long ago I was also reading (your) Whitman who is (I think) underrated over on our side of the Atlantic.  For short pieces, I love ‘a Clear Midnight'. I do like political poets -- you mentioned at some point I think you like Blake -- now there's someone who was angry  :)

Ah, yes, Blake...the greatest poet that no one knows they are quoting.

He is is both the writer of the line, "tiger tiger burning bright" and the painter of The Great Red Dragon and The Woman Clothed With the Sun.

Blake is the Philip K. Dick of poets and painters...everyone knows his work but no one knows the artist.

Nothing about Blake strikes me as particularly angry, and his politics are the politics of the mystic.

Fiery the angels rose, and as they rose deep thunder rolled
Around their shores: indignant burning with the fires of Orc

Misquoted...yes, but very well...for the script of Bladerunner.

  But I digress.

If Blake could do it, why can't an Acaeum member?

Even in Canada "tyre" is rare and "tire" common - very sad!

Mystic oh yes, but there is so much more to Blake; radical, dissenter, sometime Jacobin and revolutionary, defender of the weak, sexual egalitarian, possible rioter and drinker…  Like a lot of people living in those times, I think he was angry too.

"All the marks remain of the slave's scourge
& tyrant's crown,
And of the Priest's o'ergorged abdomen
& of the merchant's thin
Sinewy deception, & of the Warrior's outbraving
& thoughtlessness
In lineaments too extended & in bones too straight & long.
They shew their wounds: they accuse…"

There was I recall a group of radicals living across the Atlantic in the colonies, at the same time, who were also quite angry…

Interesting then, that Blake's America a Prophecy ends with the prediction that the American revolt against Urizen's law, as represented by the chaos of Orc, will ultimately result in destruction.

I guess I hadn't really thought of Blake's other social commentary within the context of his times.

I had been out of town for a week and missed my weekly Half Price Books run. I finally got a chance to go today and nothing new on the shelves but I caught an unusually friendly staffer who showed me what they had behind the counter.....nabbed an Immortals box set for $15 with 15% off and.....

I won an eBay lot of low-value items.  I paid too much, but I wanted that copy of S1.  I opened the package this morning . . .

Hiding amidst the remains of a cut-up set of Holmes rules was a 12th printing of the Greyhawk Supplement booklet.  Yeah, it's not worth anything, but I was expecting only S1, X1, and B2.

In opening up my stores of old game stuff, I discovered a couple of items that I did not really know about before.

1)  A set of city geomorphs...where did those come from?  How much are they worth?

2)  Some TSR character sheets for various classes, printed on goldenrod.  Are those anything interesting?

3)  The official stats for Warduke.  Guess, which publication I found them in.

4)  Some cardstock items by TSR...one labled "treetops" and the other set depicting stone walls or floors...in color.  What are those?

5)  Copies of The Strategic Review.  One has an elephant and the other has WWI fighter planes on the cover.  The third is just a newsletter format.  Rare?

6)  A packet of blank TSR layout sheets in their envelope.  (Apparently, they were extras I hung onto?)

7) X2 Castle Amber...with an Erol Otus giant crushing a tower in his grasp.  (What's with that?)

8)  Castle Greyhawk (The comedy version...was that meant to spite Gygax?)

9) The Village of Hommlet (Probably an early monochrome print.)

10)  About a million hardcover books...in worse condition than I remember.  Apparently, I played them half to death.

11)  Some piece of crap second-party thing called Palace of the Vampire Queen (OK...I lied about that.)

Uncut City Geos can sell for $60-80. I take it they are the TSR kind, not the Dundracon ones?

You could get the same for a Palace of The Vampire Queen, but if you've got the folder I'll give you a hundred for it. :D

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.
